In the theocratic city of Ysle, the Priestesses convene to choose the next Blessed Princess from among their ranks. And they elect Shjasta, a young Healer Priestess and daughter of the previous Princess, as Ysle’s next ruler. By tradition, every Yslean Princess must have a Champion that serves as both her protector and consort, and the Sacred Tournament is called. In the Arena of the Gods, the last man standing becomes the Princess’ Champion!

Everyone is shocked, however, when Shjasta’s Champion turns out to be Wraith Dasher, a foul-mouthed, ill-mannered foreign young man with an unknown past. Right from day one the Princess and her Champion clash head-on. But after a sacred ceremony meant to symbolize the God’s blessings goes awry, and growing rumors that Anchlesia, a ruthless Empire that dominates the western half of Alnor, is gaining a foothold into the A’dari Wastes – an accursed land where a powerful, long-lost civilization once thrived – a dissenting Priestess starts a revolt that ousts Shjasta from power.

Following her instincts and faith – as well as hints of a possible connection between the failed ceremony and the ancient A’dari – Shjasta and Wraith embark on a quest that takes them to the ruined heart of a lost realm, uncovering ancient, dark secrets that could endanger all of Alnor – and a light of hope that could put an end to Anchlesia’s ambitions once and for all.
