Prologue
The day began much the same as any other, the hum of traffic past the window mixing with my grunts and groans as i struggled out of bed. Peeling back the curtains i did notice one difference, the sun poking its head between the clouds. which was quite a pleasant surprise because where i lived was mostly a damp and rainy place even in the summer. Heading out the front door for school i was met again with a change from the norm, instead of the stiff cool breeze that came from the hills overlooking the city, today there was nothing not even a puff of wind.
As i meandered slowly through the towering chrome painted black gates that stood at the entrance making it resemble more a prison than a school, I began to wonder if these strange weather conditions meant anything but was quickly distracted by the arrival of my best friend James.
“Ready for another day of torture” he said smiling broadly
“I guess so” I replied glumly.
“Come on, it's not that bad plus the sun’s out, give me smile” he said shoving me on the shoulder
“I’m at school why would i smile, the repetitive lessons, the cruel teachers besides Mrs Finlay or the stamping out of any individuality at all. Yeah loads to smile about”
“Jeez your in one hell of a mood this morning, I hope you cheer up by this afternoon”
“Why what’s this afternoon?” I questioned with a puzzled look on my face.
“You’ll see” he replied mischievously
I dreaded to think what he was planning but we could talk no longer as we separated at the main school building,
a pristine triple glazed, three story building, with glistening windows that shone in the sunlight. The rooms inside were brand new and should have felt nice but felt sterile like a hospital with white walls that seemed to be too clean, furnished tables and chairs that looked like they belonged in a dining room not a school all contributing to a feeling of strangeness inside, The main foyer had a 60 inch TV that was constantly playing the news ad nauseum. This time it was reporting about some sinkhole that had opened up further up north on the main highway through town which was the third sinkhole to open in as many days.
I entered my form room slung my bag of back and dropped into my chair at the front of the classroom.
My teacher Mrs Finlay entered shortly afterwards
“Good morning everyone" Mrs Finlay entered the classroom
“Good morning” choroused the class
“Lovely, let’s take the register, Alex Brown?”
“Present”
…..
As usual i decided to take a snoos through most of form time, however a strange feeling came upon me, a somewhat familiar feeling that made my heart race and my fingers tingle, a feeling i had not felt in quite some time, Mana, the product of the gods was coming back. I immediately woke up with a somewhat new found joy only suppressed by a sense of fear, “OH WELL I GUESS MY TIME OF PEACE IS UP ” i muttered under my breath with a smile on my face. “THEY’RE COMING”. Looking outside into the crystal clear sky i started to notice the formation of storm clouds. And as the minutes turned to hours and as the storm clouds thickened it only became more evident that he was indeed coming back. Turning my head i look at the oversized TV that loomed at the front of the classroom. Something immediately catches my eye on the news. The lightning, it seemed to be sticking the power stations in a consecutive order instead of randomly hitting the ground like they usually do, all of a sudden the TV turns off and the lights go black. Closing my eyes i go back to sleep and wait for their arrival.
