Gloom. Dread. The final battle between the villain and the heroine is never the epic confrontation between good and evil one hopes for. On one side, a woman with a grudge deeper than the Ostoroth Ravine burns her way through an enchanted forest to get to her foe, the despicable slayer of her adopted kin; on another, a warlock and tinkerer of ancient artifacts, ready to resort to a dangerous spell to ensure her demise.

But not all goes as planned. As the warlock unleashes his spell, it malfunctions when met with the heroine's lightning-charged sword. As a result, the reality... shifts.

Awaking in a new world, the villain Gustav must now seek what he has lost: his capacity for battle. But as he seeks for his lost magical artifacts and enchanted battle attire, he finds himself surrounded by a mystery far more sinister than befits the faraway hamlet of Rivershearth, a village in the middle of wherever.

Meanwhile, scribe Allen has earned the ire of his betters, and is trying to avoid the watchful - and awfully incisive - eye of Brother Conrad, the right hand of the Abbot. But when a maiden clothed in lightning crashes down in the middle of the monks' morning vespers, the tranquility of the sacred fortress of Frostrock gets shattered. Now Allen has to avoid both Brother Conrad and the supposed goddess Anodyne, who hints that she knows more about Allen than he would care for. But there are hidden machinations at work at the sacred fortress of Frostrock, and Allen will eventually have to choose his allegiances. Will it be to his Brethren, or to the warrior goddess of legend?
