Rowan is a huntsman from Kilford, tied in a contract with the Queen that cannot be broken. When the Queen sends him to kill her estranged son, Rowan sets off towards Bourrault, the town her son is said to be hiding. However, he meets Fan, a charming and annoying thief who claims that he can help Rowan find the Queen's son. Rowan is forced to grapple with his understanding of the world, and perhaps the understanding of his own heart.

Can he kill who he's been sent to, or will it kill him to try?
