A bolt of lightning tore across the sky and a peal of thunder followed, I was jolted awake by the sound of thunder. I was so deep in sleep that I couldn’t remember anything, I could only see paper scattered all over the floor. I quickly went to the washroom and took a cool bath; it got a lot better and got me refreshed. Then I got to remember that I had to go on an adventure trip with Mike and Steph. The reason I had to go for a trip was that I did a lot of hard work in researching a Neon-green lizard that can cure metabolic bone disease.
My name is Sofia and I am a medical researcher and a hodophile. Mike is a scientist and Steph is Apothecary. Mike and Steph are experienced researchers; I am a newbie like it’s only been a few months that I got here in this field for researching. As I am new I had a lot of pressure and burden on me, but still, I love researching even though how hard the situation will become for me I won’t give up. So our goal is simply to know that is there a neon-green lizard because it is the cure Metabolic bone disease (it can cause serious pain in bones; spreads easily). This disease has been spreading in a city named Cotonou. Many children are suffering from this disease and it is said if it won’t be cured then the people will become disabled. And I don’t want anyone to suffer or die so I will do my best to find this species.
As the rain stopped, we started packing our things and got ready to go exploring. So on this expedition, we are traveling about 300 miles from the sprawling city of Brisbin to the sparsely populated town of Meandarra, Australia. We packed the least amount of things so that it would be easy for us to travel. In the cold breeze of wind mike drove the jeep, the environment was very thrilling I was the most exhilarated one sitting, I was seeing the nature and the surroundings so focused as it was my first time researching on a species that I don’t know that does it exist or not. We got saw many species of animals that we only saw on TV or pictures but now we see it with our bare eyes.
We reached our destination and stopped at a small hotel, we booked a room so that we could keep our stuff there. Taking the most important things with us like Band-Aids, poison curer, some snacks, and some tools. We started our journey and begin to search all around the forest. As per Steph research, the lizard is quite large and its color is neon green. That following day we had found 3 types of lizard species: The sand monitor, blue tongue skink and a poisonous newt. But we couldn’t catch the neon-green lizard.
Late afternoon was creeping in, as sharp beams of sunlight cut through the trees with a blinding effect. I could feel the feeling of catching the lizard opportunity beginning to close. Yet my hold on hope remained strong. It had been hours of searching that lizard but we weren’t able to do it. We all three were losing hope but we didn’t give up. As everybody was tired we thought of continuing the research tomorrow.
It was about 7:30 in the morning, and we all got up quickly and started searching the lizard, after driving about some time we got to see a green thing roaming around after taking a clear view mike shouted that it is a lizard. I was so amazed that I got out of the car and ran towards it, the lizard was so fast that it went to the top of the tree, I was so happy without a second of hesitation I scramble up the tree. It was a bit hard but I tried, I grabbed him strongly so that it won't jump to another branch and I succeeded. I was so excited but there were two things that I had to do after that and it was to go climb down the tree and check whether it is really the lizard we have been researching for or not. Climbing down the tree was a bit of a precarious scenario but I did it. Both of them were very happy about what I did. We went back home and tested the lizard DNA and check whether it is the neon-green lizard. After the tests, done by mike and Steph we got to know it was the neon-green lizard. We were so proud of ourselves and I was the happiest one of all.
Steph started making medicine for curing the disease. In that medicine, we only had to add about 5 to 6 drops of lizard blood, and some other chemicals. After some days the medicine was ready and now it was the time to check that will it work, so we had to travel to Cotonou for that. We arrived there earlier than we thought. Seeing the condition of people, we had an outrageous reaction. The kids were suffering badly, that they couldn’t walk properly. So we decided to test adults first. Steph said it will take about 2 to 3 days to see the results whether the person is recovering or not. After 2 days we took the test of an adult that we gave medicine to, we were very pleased by the results because that adult was slightly recovered. By that, we went to pharmacies and hospitals and gave medicines. It was soon told that people were recovered by that medicine. Mike named that medicine as Mefloquine.
The most shocking thing that we were concern about was that, we were on TV, I don’t know-how. Soon we were awarded the Nobel peace prize because we saved many people's lives. Our parents were very proud of us. We were all delighted by our hard work. That was the most unforgettable and adventurous trip in my whole life.
