Magic. A word bandied about without any thought to its meaning. But magic is real. Mages are real. And powerful. And dangerous. They cannot hide, every minor use of their power marking their skin for all to see. But nor can they live freely and openly.

Magic, like all power, is not inherently bad. No. But like all power, it can corrupt if left unchecked, if used for unjust ends, if used out of fear or anger. And it is so easy to allow emotion to rule.

When mages are killed for their family’s reputation, or sold like property to be kept drugged and used for cheap thrills, or bound to obey and forged into weapons to be wielded against others like themselves, is magic the problem or the solution? Is it either?

In the end it doesn’t matter what magic is to the world, a blessing or a curse; it is power and all power has a price.
