Autumn Schofield remained silent as she sat in the waiting room of the hospital neither entirely sure what they should say to the other. The newly single mother had been married for over five years now when her husband decided to take a hike right before deciding to welcome another life into the world. Autumn could recall her excitement upon discovering she was pregnant, she surprised her husband with the news, even how he cried his eyes out as she relayed the news only for her to realize that they weren't tears of joy.Even though he left that very same day, Autumn refused to be sad, because her new child was due to arrive in nine months and she swore to herself that she would love him with all her heart.Bringing him into the world was not an easy process but being able to hold him in her arms made her the happiest women in the world. However her happy times barely lasted a day. After having a chance to hold the child he was taken by nurses to ensure he was a healthy born child… but he never returned. When the mother asked what the problem was she was met with the same responses “ we're running more tests” or “you’ll be able to see him shortly”.
It had been two weeks since then and the new mother was due to check out of the hospital today when she and her mother Nessewee were asked to wait in the waiting room.
The woman was suddenly overcome with fear. What if something was wrong? Did something happen during pregnancy? Although she hadnt had him prematurely, she began blaming herself questioning everything she had done during the pregnancy.
She began to breathe heavily when her mom gave her hand a light squeeze and reassuring smile “ I'm sure he's fine honey like the doctor said they're just running more tests.”
“I don’t know mom all these supposed tests and we don’t get to see him once?”
“Maybe he came out a little genius and they're just testing his I.Q?” she shrugged wrapping taking her nervous daughter's hand in her own
“You are ridiculous.” she laughed
“ That smile on your face says otherwise .”
Her mother’s words had helped give her some peace of mind but there was still the nagging feeling in the back of her mind…
Something had not gone right.
The pair were growing impatient and just when they were about a nurse how much longer they caught sight of their doctor as well as a well dressed man heading in their direction.
The grey suit the man was wearing was noticeably tailored as it also had what Autumn assumed was the man’s last name sewn above the right chest pocket. His hair was gelled and combed back which could be noted as he kept brushing his hand across it as if a strand was out of place. The man wore an expensive looking watch that she couldn’t tell if it was painted to look gold or was actually made of it,but given the distinct shine it gave off she assumed the latter. He wore dark shades even inside the building which Autumn struck as odd considering the sun wasn't shining outside.
He wore a cool smile on his face that for some reason set off alarms in the womens head. He approached the two women, his smile not shifting, and removed his shades.
“This” our doctor said, “ Is Mr Jameson and he’s come a long way just to see your son”. The man extended his hand in greetings which my mother shook cautiously. “ I imagine you two have questions for him?”
“Actually I do ” Autumn spoke up before her mother could get a chance to speak. “ Why is this man here and why are you showing me him instead of my son?” She was clearly annoyed while her mother did not even attempt to hide her laughter at her daughter’s words.
The man known as Mr. Jameson did not seem phased by the womens outburst but in fact amused as he smiled down at her. “ If you wish to see him now you can.” Mr. Jameson answered calmly as he put his shades back on.
The pair was even more confused now than they were before. Wasn’t the whole point of them sitting here to wait to receive the newborn?
“Are you sure that’s wise?” Their doctor asked suddenly frantically only to be silenced by Mr. Jameson raising his hand. “Follow me.” he said monotone as he turned on his heel and headed towards the elevator. The alarms in Autumn's head were telling her to just turn around and leave but that was not an option, she was not leaving without her child. Grabbing her mother’s hand, she kept a steady pace with Mr. Jameson as he made his way to the elevator and pushed the button. The door opened quickly prompting the four of them to quickly enter.
As soon as the metal doors slid closed Jameson stepped forward and pushed multiple buttons in a certain order.
5-1-4-2-3
As he pressed the last button the elevator suddenly jolted down at a faster rate then it should be able to move. Autumn watched as the numbers of the floors moved backwards from one to negative five before coming to a sudden stop that prompted her to grab the rail as the doctor and her mother both fell to the floor.
Jameson, who appeared completely unbothered by the elevator stopping, waiting for the doors to slide open and step out. “ Do try to keep up. I've got ten more new parents to see today.”
Upon stepping out Autumn noticed that the walls of this new floor appeared to be made of copper as it gave of a peculiar shine thanks to the fluorescent bulbs. She and her mother quickly followed behind Jameson as the other people in the hall quickly moved to the sides clearing a path for the man. Many moved out of respect but there were a few that seemed unnerved by the man’s very presence. The man seemed bored with this entire situation as if he had walked down this floor many times before and was simply uninterested now, but Autumn made sure to take in the surroundings spread out before her as she kept a steady pace with Jameson.
“While i think it’s unexplanatory it should go without saying that nothing you see her shall leave this building.”
The man warned as he made one final turn onto an empty hallway. As she examined the hall Autumn noted the ten lights shined along both walls indicating ten rooms on each.
“Brace yourself Mrs. Schofield you're in for a trip.”
Autumn and Nessewee slowly walked forward stopping just short of the first window. Autumn looked back hesitantly and noted that Jameson had stayed at the edge of the hallway.
His expression was emotionless but autumn could feel his eyes on her begging her to move forward.
Almost in a challenging nature she stepped forward first and looked into the first window on her right. She let out a high pitched scream as she quickly backed away from the window. The room itself had been ordinary but the fact that all the items and furniture in the room were floating around the room a considerable high distance from the ground had been what caught her off guard.
However, the fact that what appears to be a ten year old girl was floating within the center of it all as she absentmindedly played a game on her tablet had been what horrified her. Slowly making her way back to the window she peered back inside and was able to confirm what she had seen. There was in fact a little girl floating about five feet off of the ground as the items in her room floated around her like her own solar system. Nessewee ,who had been baffled by the scene herself had moved to the third window on the left side of the room and witnessed an even more chilling scene.
Ash covered not only the walls but even the little toy chairs as a five year old boy could be seen running around his room shooting hot balls of flame from his palms.
“Amazing isn’t it?” Jameson spoke in Nessewee's ear, sending chills down the women's spine as the man was so close.
“What’s wrong with them?” Autumn asked moving towards her mother
“Wrong?” Jameson seemed confused by the response. “There is nothing wrong these children are perfectly fine- in fact they’re ten times better than you or I.”
He placed his hand on the glass and let out a sigh. “There the key to evolution.”
“What do you mean by that? Did you people do this to them?” Nessewee asked looking at all the other rooms which she assumed had more children with bizarre qualities behind the glass.
“No.. but I wish we had” Jameson answered sadly “ They were born this way for reasons we cannot explain and these children are just the ones born in the state.” Jameson walked towards another window and read the label at the bottom :Jaden Giles. He turned towards the couple once again his wide grin returning but holding a more sinister turn.
“I have a proposition for you that i think will interest you greatly.”
