The Time Stitch: A Nurse Across Centuries

The Market Find

The Market Find

Oct 30, 2025

Emily Hart walked through the weekend market near downtown Los Angeles with her coffee still steaming in one hand and her phone in the other. She was a nurse, used to night shifts, used to exhaustion, and used to pretending she was fine. The market was crowded, filled with antique furniture, handmade jewelry, and the smell of roasted almonds. For once she wanted a quiet morning, something that reminded her life wasn’t only about hospital corridors and patient alarms.

She stopped at a stall covered with old wooden boxes and Civil War memorabilia. A gray-haired vendor smiled at her, his table filled with rusted medals, faded flags, and cracked leather journals. One object caught her eye—a small worn medical kit made of dark wood. It had brass corners and an engraving on the lid that read, “Property of Dr. N. Cole, 1863.” She brushed away a thin layer of dust and felt a strange pull in her chest, like the air shifted for a second.

“How much?” she asked.

“For that piece?” The vendor leaned forward. “Fifty, but it’s more history than money.”

Emily smiled. “History’s my weakness.”

She paid and tucked the kit into her tote bag, not knowing that she had just carried home a key to another century.

That evening, back in her small apartment, she opened the box carefully. Inside were surgical tools—scalpels, clamps, and a folded note yellowed by time. The handwriting was elegant, almost poetic: “For those who heal, may time never be your enemy.”

She felt a shiver but ignored it, thinking it was just the chill of the air conditioner. She took out the tools one by one, amazed at their craftsmanship. When she touched the final scalpel, the room’s light flickered. The sound of the refrigerator vanished. A deep hum filled her ears, as if she was underwater. Then everything went white.

When she opened her eyes, she was lying on the ground, surrounded by smoke and noise. Men shouted, horses neighed, and gunfire echoed across a wide open field. Her hands trembled as she looked around. A cannon exploded not far from her. The air smelled of mud and blood.

“What the—” she gasped, crawling toward a fallen soldier. He was bleeding from his leg, moaning in pain.

She pressed her hands to the wound, her instincts kicking in. “Stay still. You’ll be fine. I’m a nurse.”

The soldier’s eyes widened. “A what?”

Emily froze. His accent was old-fashioned, his uniform blue and dusty. She turned and saw rows of tents, soldiers running, and a large flag of stars and stripes—but with fewer stars than she remembered.

She looked down at herself. Her jeans and T-shirt were smeared with mud. Around her neck hung the small brass key from the antique box. The world spun. She realized the impossible. Somehow, she wasn’t in Los Angeles anymore. She was in the middle of the Civil War.

A cannon fired again. She covered her ears, shaking. A man on horseback shouted orders. “Bring the wounded to the tent! Hurry!”

Emily took a breath. Panic wouldn’t help. She pulled the soldier’s arm over her shoulder and dragged him toward the tents. The world had gone mad, but someone needed help, and helping was the only thing she knew how to do.
