It was a terrible storm. Great waves hit the small ship. The howling wind screamed and ripped the canvas sails to pieces. No one could hear the cries for help. The storm spilt the ship in two and sent all but a lucky few to a watery grave...
The warm sunlight on Viola's face finally woke her. She raised her head and looked around. She was on a long sandy beach, stretching as far as she could see. Birds filled the air with their beautiful songs and she felt herself falling asleep again. But a groan from nearby made her sit up, wide awake.
It was the old captain of the unlucky ship. She suddenly remembered the storm. Her brother, Sebastian.. where was his" She looked up and down on the long beach. He was nowhere to be seen. " Where is my brother?" she asked. "Is he dead?" she began to cry softly. "You are alive, lady," said the captain, trying to make her feel better. "And maybe your brother is too. When he fell into the water I saw him tie himself very strongly to the ship's mast and floated for as long as I could see.
His word's immediately filled Viola with hope. "If I escaped, perhaps he did as well," she said. She wiped her tears away and looked around her again. "Do you know this country sir?" she asked. "Yes madam, it's called Illyria. Duke Orsino rules here." "Orsino? My father told me about him once. He was a bachelor then." " He still is, but people say he's now in love with a noblewoman called Olivia, the daughter of a count who died a year ago. She was put under her brother, but he also died too, a few weeks back and now she has locked herself away and will not ses any man"
"I wish I could serve this lady.." said Viola thoughtfully, "It would give me time to think about what i am going to do" "Im afraid thats near to impossible. She shutted herself in her own house, dedicating herself to weeping for her now dead brother." "Then I'll serve the Duke" Viola said firmly "But I will need your help, sir. Please, could you find me some men's clothes so I can pretend I am a young man?" "I am your servant, madam." answered the captain. "Thank you, sir. I was sure from your looks that you were a good man. Can you keep a secret too?" "You can trust me, my lady," said the captain. "Let my eyes be cut out of their sockets if I tell a soul of this secret." "Then tell no one of this, here is some gold for you for your service." Viola put out a purse of gold and handed it to the captain, he then gave Viola some mens clothes.
Filled with new hope, Viola followed the captain through the tree and out onto the road which would take them to Duke Orsino's house
