The World of Seas and Skies
Chapter 1: The Beginning of the End
A dim glow from the screen illuminated Althea’s bedroom, the only light in the otherwise dark room. The hum of her computer filled the air as she leaned back in her chair, fingers dancing across the keyboard, her VR headset snug against her head. She was once again immersed in The World of Seas and Skies, an open-world fantasy game driven by advanced AI technology. She’d played it for years, and it was a world far more welcoming than her own...
Inside the Game – Sethia’s Wetlands
The clash of steel echoed through the dense coral jungle, followed by a loud harsh roar from a monstrous troll, its body covered in thick sea moss. Towering coral trees with bioluminescent vines form an eerie blue glow on the battlefield. Axel (in-game name: 2Badass4U, rank 2), a mage with blonde hair and blue eyes, stood his ground, breath coming in ragged gasps as he gripped his enchanted tome. The massive troll towered over him, its club raised high.
“Alt! I need your help!” Axel called, his usually composed demeanor now tinged with desperation.
A flash of silver cut through the air as Alt (in-game name: Alt, rank 3), a tall knight with gray hair and bandaged-covered eyes, moved with inhuman speed. Clad in dark armor, his dual swords gleamed beneath the jungle’s bioluminescent glow. With a single, swift motion, Alt cleaved through the troll’s thick hide, severing its arm before plunging his blade deep into its chest. The beast let out a final, earth-shaking groan before collapsing into a pile of shimmering dust.
Axel exhaled deeply, wiping the sweat from his brow. “Huff... huff... Thank you.”
Alt gave a simple nod, scanning the battlefield with a sharp gaze, his focus flicking from one teammate to the next.
Suddenly, a piercing screech split the air.
A giant sky raptor, its wingspan nearly twenty feet wide, dove toward Kane (in-game name: K4N3DY, rank 10), talons extended and glinting in the moonlight. The orange-haired archer with glowing orange eyes yelped, dodging the creature’s deadly claws and darting across the sand. Her crossbow shook in her hands as she scrambled for safety.
“ALT! THANK GOD! I THOUGHT I WAS GOING TO DIE!” Kane cried out, her voice a mixture of panic and dramatic flair.
Alt moved like a blur, his swords flashing through the air before the raptor could reach Kane. The creature let out a strangled cry, its body disintegrating into shimmering fragments.
Kane gasped in relief, then, without a second thought, lunged toward Alt, attempting to hug him.
In a single, fluid motion, Alt placed a hand gently over her face, stopping her mid-air.
Kane let out a defeated whimper.
A short distance away, Madden (in-game name: XxMADMANxX, rank 12), the team’s tank, stood firm against another raptor. His sword and shield gleamed in the moonlight as he swung in a wide arc, effortlessly cleaving the beast in two. His spiky black hair whipped in the wind, and his black eyes burned with irritation.
“Nice one, Max!” Kane called out with an exaggerated thumbs-up.
Madden scowled, cracking his knuckles. “I’m a TANK, bird brain. You should’ve handled those things yourself easily.”
Kane paled. “Eeeek! I’m sorry, Sir!” She bowed frantically, hands pressed together in a pleading gesture.
Madden simply sighed and shook his head.
From the shadows, a figure with tucked black hair emerged, his crimson eyes gleaming with mischief.
Damon (in-game name: DemonFox, rank 6), clad in dark assassin’s gear, leaned casually against a tree, his knives twirling effortlessly between his fingers. A smirk tugged at his lips.
“If you suck at your class, you might as well be a Support,” Damon said, his voice dripping with sarcasm. “Better off on the sidelines.”
Kane gasped, clutching her chest dramatically. “Y-Ya’ll are so mean!”
With a sniffle, she spun on her heel and bolted into the jungle.
Axel, who approached the group, sighed. “You two should probably apologize later.”
Madden and Damon exchanged a glance before reluctantly nodding.
Axel turned to Alt. “Can you go after her? Before she actually gets herself killed?”
Alt nodded wordlessly, slipping into the jungle after Kane.
Sethia’s Coastal Jungle
The dense foliage opened up to reveal a breathtaking coastal shoreline, where the sea stretched endlessly, its waters shimmering beneath the faint purple hue of the sky. The air was thick with salt, and the rhythmic sound of gentle waves crashing against the shore filled the otherwise tranquil silence.
Alt found Kane sitting on a large rock, sulking as she absentmindedly tossed pebbles into the ocean.
At the sound of approaching footsteps, Kane peeked over her shoulder.
“Alt? Did you miss me already?” she teased, batting her eyelashes playfully.
Alt stopped a few feet away, his expression unreadable. “Axel wanted me to look after you.”
Kane pouted, kicking a nearby rock. “Meh, you’re no fun... Why does everyone treat me like crap?! I’m supposed to be the princess of this group!”
Alt simply crossed his arms, his voice calm. “...Ready to head back?”
Kane huffed before a mischievous grin spread across her face. “Yep! I’m gonna KILL those two motherf—”
Alt turned away and started walking back without a word.
“OY! WAIT UP!” Kane called, sprinting after him.
The two walked back toward their team, their voices fading into the distance.
Axel’s Estate
Inside Axel’s lavish, player-owned estate, the team gathered around a grand wooden table. A fireplace crackled in the background, its flickering shadows created a warm glow against the stone walls.
Axel, the party leader, leaned forward, his expression serious as he addressed the group. “So… is everyone available for the big event in an hour?”
Kane shot a fist into the air. “HELL YEAH!”
Madden nodded silently, his face impassive.
Damon smirked, offering a lazy thumbs-up.
Alt remained silent, his eyes distant.
Axel raised an eyebrow, his gaze narrowing. “...Alt?”
Alt exhaled slowly. “Depends… My work.”
The room fell silent. A brief shadow of disappointment flickered across everyone’s faces.
Alt sighed, his tone softer. “I’ll try to make an exception today, though...”
Kane’s cheers echoed throughout the house. “WOOHOO! THANK YOU, ALT!”
Damon smirked. “Heh. Without you, we’re screwed.”
Axel chuckled, but there was a note of relief in his voice. “Come on, guys, have a little faith in yourselves.”
Despite his words, the team exchanged knowing glances, then bumped fists, ready for battle.
Sethia’s Market District – Prepping for the Big Game Event
The market district of Sethia buzzed with energy. Tall, spiral-shaped buildings crafted from coral and underwater materials towered over the streets, their colorful facades catching the light. Vendors shouted their wares of shimmering potions, enchanted gear, and rare materials, blending into the chaotic chatter of the crowd.
Axel and his team weaved through the bustling throng, arms laden with potions, their minds already focused on the event ahead.
Nearby, a small commotion caught their attention.
“Shut up, noob! Don’t tell us what to do with our coins!” a voice snapped.
A player in ragged armor flinched as two heavily geared warriors loomed over him.
Axel’s eyes narrowed as he stepped forward. “What’s going on here?”
One of the bullies sneered. “None of your business, rich kid.”
Axel clicked his tongue in annoyance. “You’re bullying a weaker player? What kind of leader does that? Unless you’re an idiot.”
Damon sighed, clearly unimpressed. “Here we go again…”
The bully’s face darkened, his fists clenching. “What did you just say to me?!”
Kane grinned mischievously. “He means you’re a looooserrrr!”
The bully’s anger spiked as his body trembled, ready to lash out.
Before a fight could break out, the bully’s companion tugged at his sleeve. “Boss, let’s go... they’re high-ranking players.”
The bully sneered, then shoved the noob to the ground. “Tch. Whatever. We’ll be back for you.”
With a final scowl, the pair turned and walked away, leaving the noob trembling in their wake.
Alt stepped forward, extending a gloved hand toward the fallen player.
The noob hesitated, his cheeks turning red. “T-Thank you…”
Alt simply nodded, his expression neutral as always.
Suddenly, the sky above them darkened, as if an unseen force had cast a shadow across the land.
A booming female robotic voice echoed across Sethia, cutting through the murmur of the crowd.
“Welcome, players! The Sea and Sky Event will now begin in... 3… 2… 1…”
