The Yokai Agency

Family Tradition

Family Tradition

May 16, 2023

Emiko perched on the edge of the skyscraper, her fox ears perked up and her amber eyes scanning the bustling city below. Clad in a snug black leather jacket and bright orange pants that hugged her lithe frame, she looked every bit the skilled warrior she was. Her short orange hair complemented her fox features, and her matching tail flicked back and forth in anticipation. Emiko was on the hunt, and she was damn good at it.

"Kana, I'm in position," Emiko spoke into the small radio in her ear, her voice low and focused.

"Copy that, Emiko. We've got a confirmed sighting of a class 3 monster in your vicinity. Be careful out there," Kana's voice crackled back through the radio.

Emiko smirked, feeling a thrill of excitement run through her. She loved nothing more than taking down monsters, and a class 3 was just the kind of challenge she relished. She scanned the streets again, looking for any sign of movement.

Suddenly, a flicker of movement caught her eye, and she leaned forward to get a better look. "I've got eyes on the target. It's moving fast, heading towards the park," she reported to Kana.

"Alright, Emiko. You know the drill. Stay focused, stay sharp, and take that thing down," Kana instructed.

Emiko nodded to herself, taking a deep breath to calm her nerves. She leaped off the edge of the skyscraper, her fox tail streaming behind her as she plummeted towards the ground. At the last moment, she twisted in mid-air, landing gracefully on the pavement below.

She took off at a sprint, darting between cars and weaving through the crowded streets. Her senses were heightened, her reflexes razor-sharp. She could feel the thrill of the chase coursing through her veins.

As she neared the park, she saw a flash of movement up ahead. She slowed her pace, creeping forward until she could almost see the monster in she shadows. It was a massive creature and Emiko knew she was in for a fight.

"Alright, Kana. I've got visual on the target. Let's do this," Emiko said, her voice low and steady.

"Be careful, Emiko. That thing looks dangerous," Kana warned.

Emiko grinned, her eyes glittering with excitement. "That's why they call me The Blade of The Yokai."

Emiko braced herself as the large monster came into view, a headless lion with a tail made of writhing cobras. It was unlike any monster she had faced before, and her heart raced with excitement and apprehension.

"Here kitty, kitty," Emiko called out, hoping to lure the creature closer.

As the monster charged towards her, Emiko quickly drew her Katana, a long sword with a fox-shaped hilt, and deftly dodged its first attack. She could feel the heat building up in her body as she called upon her fire magic, knowing that this battle would require all of her skills and abilities.

With a fierce cry, Emiko rushed towards the monster, her Katana slashing through the air with precision. The yokai's tail lashed out, narrowly missing her, as she dodged and weaved around its attacks. Emiko knew that she had to take out the tail first, or else it would continue to strike at her relentlessly.

She concentrated her fire magic into her sword, the blade glowing with an intense heat. As she swung her Katana, flames erupted from the blade, cutting through the cobras with ease. The yokai roared in pain and anger, and Emiko felt a surge of satisfaction at her success.

But the battle was far from over. The headless lion charged towards her again, its massive paws pounding the ground with each step. Emiko switched to her pistols, firing off rounds of silver bullets that the yokai seemed to shrug off. She knew that silver bullets were not always effective against all monsters, and this one was proving to be particularly resistant.

With a quick mental calculation, Emiko decided to switch tactics. She holstered her pistols and called forth her talisman, a piece of paper inscribed with powerful spells. With a swift motion, she flung the talisman towards the monster, and it exploded in a burst of magical energy. The yokai roared in pain and staggered backwards, giving Emiko the opportunity to strike.

She charged forward, her Katana glowing with fire once again. With a swift, clean blow, she severed the monster's tail. The yokai's body shuddered and turned into dust, its threat to the city of Neo-Tokyo vanquished.

Emiko breathed heavily, her heart still racing from the intensity of the battle. She knew that there would be more challenges to come, but in that moment, she felt a sense of pride and accomplishment that made it all worthwhile.

As Emiko sheathed her Katana, a black military vehicle pulled up to the park. Kana, a small-built girl with short black hair and glasses, stepped out of the driver's side and walked towards Emiko, her arms outstretched for a hug.

"Great job, Emiko! You really are the Blade of Yokai," Kana said, her grin spreading across her face, her glasses reflecting the city lights.

Emiko grinned back, feeling a sense of satisfaction wash over her. She loved working with Kana, and the two of them had taken down countless monsters together.

"Thanks, Kana. That was a tough one, but we made a great team," Emiko said, returning the hug.

Kana pulled back and gestured towards the vehicle. "Let's head back to headquarters. We can debrief and grab some well-deserved rest."

Emiko nodded, feeling a sense of exhaustion wash over her. She followed Kana to the vehicle and climbed into the passenger seat, feeling grateful for the chance to relax and unwind.

As they drove back to headquarters, Emiko leaned her head back and reached for her backpack.

"It's feeding time." Emiko whispered.

As she rummaged through her bag, she couldn't help but smile when she felt a small, hard object inside. She pulled it out to reveal her pet turtle, a rare and mysterious Yokai that she had found on one of her missions.

"Ah, there you are, I'm sorry I took so long."

The turtle had a dark metal shell that seemed to shimmer in the light, and its eyes glowed with an otherworldly energy. Emiko had never seen anything like it before, but she had quickly become attached to the little creature.

She took out a small container of food from her backpack and offered it to the turtle. It eagerly ate the food, its tiny jaws snapping up the bits of meat and vegetables. Emiko couldn't help but feel a sense of satisfaction watching her pet feed.

"Wait, are you going to keep that? We still don't know what that thing is." Kana said.

"I know it's risky, but I feel like it's meant to be with me," Emiko replied, looking up at Kana with a determined expression. "Besides, I've never seen anything like it before. It might be a rare type of yokai that could help us with our investigations."

Kana sighed, but couldn't argue with Emiko's logic. "Alright, but you better keep an eye on it and make sure it doesn't cause any trouble."

Emiko nodded, grateful for Kana's support. As they drove back to headquarters, she couldn't help but think about the turtle's mysterious origins. She wondered if there were other yokai out there that she had yet to discover.

"I've been thinking," she said suddenly, turning to Kana. "Maybe we should start investigating more unusual cases. There could be yokai out there that we don't even know exist."

Kana raised an eyebrow. "What do you mean by unusual cases?"

"I mean, cases that don't fit into the usual categories of yokai. Like this turtle, for example. It doesn't fit into any of the descriptions we have of known yokai types. There could be other cases like this that we're missing out on."

Kana nodded thoughtfully. "That's a good point. We should definitely start keeping an eye out for anything unusual. Who knows what we might find."

As they pulled into headquarters, Emiko couldn't wait to start her next investigation.
