The night was still young and snow had already made the journey to the ground. Alill, a young boy not even in his teens yet. He has brown hair, green eyes with a hint of grey in them. He had fair skin was around the average height of a twelve year-old Irish boy back when swords were still used. He was sitting in the watch tower that was giving out a slight danger warning. It was made of logs and rope and was only meant to hold one person. With Alill was Aidan his much older brother. Aidan was a big man who was in his mid twenties. He had a decent build and a few scars that he had gathered whilst out hunting. He was armed with a crossbow and dagger. He looked almost identical to Alill although neither liked to admit it.
"It is a bit chilly tonight isn't it whipper snapper?" Aidan said with his heavy Irish accent all the while looking down at Alill.
"Would you mind bringing me a jacket I would but I am on guard duty" he continued.
"Whipper snapper? Just how old are you meant to be?" Alill replied with the same accent and made his way down to the safety of the ground. Alill's feet sunk into the snow at the bottom of the ladder and immediately he could feel his toes turn to ice. A snow flake had found its way onto his nose and had melted simultaneously. Alill sneezed and the drop of water was flung to who knows where. He plowed through the snow leaving a trail behind him. He had finally made his way to his brother's home. It wasn't very big and was made mainly out of stone and straw. He opened the door to find Aidan's wife Shannon making a stew.
"Oh are you coming over for dinner Ali?"
"No I am just here for Aidan's jacket. Oh and by the way it's Alill, Ali doesn't hold the same meaning"
"Oh of course, I am sorry" Shannon said whilst letting out a giggle. She walked to the coat hanger and pulled a wolf skin jacket off. It was slightly tattered and the brown fur colour was starting to fade but after holding it Alill could not deny that it was warm. With his objective in hand Alill made his way back to the watch tower. On his way his parents found him. They smiled at him and both had the smile that warmed you no matter how cold it was. Alill loved the smiles they gave they were like the lights for when he was lost. His father heaved him onto his shoulders.
"What do you have there champ?" He asked.
"Don't tell me Aidan is making you run his errands?" His mother added to the interrogation.
"It's okay he is on watching duty anyway" Alill replied with a smile beaming from his face.
His parents carried him to the watch tower then waved at him.
"We have to start dinner now so we will see you later, and Alill don't be later than the last time okay?" His asked in a way that sounded like an order.
"Mhm, okay!"
Alill climbed up the ladder and handed the heavy fur coat to Aidan. At first he was hesitant as he didn't want to give up the source of warmth residing in his hands. Aidan gave it a little tug then sat down. Alill being the young boy he was sat next to him started to fall asleep. He slowly collapsed on to his brother's lap and closing his eyes. Having been successful Alill was beginning to doze off when Aidan started a weird conversation.
"Alill do you know why this is such an important duty?"
"So you can keep an eye on the livestock" Alill replied thinking he had answered the question in the correct manner. Aidan chuckled then let out a sigh.
"That is true but there is another reason."
"Like what?"
"Like if there is danger we can warn the village so we can all get away safely"
"What danger?" Alill was curious and tried his best to stay awake long enough to find out.
"You know like fires and wolves and well... Other kinds of danger"
"Other kinds of danger?" Alill was kind of scared by this statement and it definitely woke him up.
"Don't worry about it, I was joking" Aidan soothed.
"Well I gotta take a leak so take over the look out for me" Aidan stood up and climbed down the ladder and gave Alill one last smile before disappearing below the floor. Alill always took this serious as Aidan always said that he would have to take over soon so he had to be alert.
It was dark and the only light came from the stand up torches stationed around the city. Alill kept his eyes wide open until something grabbed his attention. From the shadows was a human like silhouette. Well not 'a' there were more and more showing up by the second. Then one stepped into the light. It was covered in grey fur from head to toe but it had more fur around its shoulders, legs and head. It had yellow eyes that chilled Alill and sent shocks through his spine. One by one. Step by step they started walking into the light. Alill knew what they were. He read fantasy books. They were a new genre in this era. These were a very scary kind of wolf a 'Werewolf'. There was one that was bigger than the rest and unlike the rest it had black fur and red eyes. It looked at Alill it froze him in place. He was scared. Scared like he had never been before.
"WEREWOLFS!!! AIDAN TELL EVERYONE TO RUN WE NEED TO RUN AWAY!" Alill was screaming at the top of his lungs whilst pointing towards them. Aidan rushed up the ladder and looked at where Alill was pointing. He grabbed Alill and jumped off the watch tower. The entire village were curious and had half their bodies out their doors.
"He's right werewolfs are here! werewolfs are here!" Aidan said this time and time again. All the while carrying Alill towards their parents house.
When they reached the house Aidan handed Alill to his parents and gave them a simple nod. They both fell to their knees and nodded. Alill could hear the panic a people realised what their situation was. There was a mass panic throughout the village. Alill's parent held him tight. His father light a few floor boards up to reveal a small space. It was compact and had barely enough room to fit Alill in it. They frantically shoved him in there all the while his mother repeating the same line.
"It's going to be all right" The one time they didn't say this line they said "No matter what happens don't move and don't make a sound. Please do this for us. Mommy and Daddy love you very much" she was crying. She held her hand over her mouth. His father closed the floor boards and covered it with a mat.
It was dark. Alill could not see anything but he could hear screams and sound of a weird material ripping apart. He had never heard it before. A minute had passed until he heard the door on the house fly open. Alill held his hand over his mouth trying his best to be silent. He read in the books that wolfs had amazing hearing. So he tried to be as quiet as possible. Then he heard his father. "Get away you monster!" he could hear him charge full speed towards the door. Dust fell from the top of the floor boards and got in his eyes. Alill started to tear up. Then he heard a sound he would never forget. His father screamed then there it was the weird material ripped again. He could hear liquid hit the floor in large amounts. His mother had collapsed and was rushing backwards. Then there were unusually loud footsteps above him. They were headed straight towards his mother.
"no, no stay awa-" The she gargled on something and started gasped for air. Then 'THUD' she was silent just like his father. There were loud footsteps above him they eventually faded but Alill did not dare come out. He was wide awake he didn't know if he just couldn't sleep due to the thoughts flooding his head of possibilities of what happened or if it was the adrenaline running through him.
There were no more screams. There was complete silence. Still Alill hid just like he was told.
