The Crash

The Crash

Feb 25, 2025

The Golden Gala
January 2025
Central Park, New York

The whispers found Lily Carrington before the champagne did.

"Is that her? The human Luna Alpha Ashton threw away?"

"I heard she sold her mother's pearls just to afford the Uber here."

Lily kept walking. Chin up, shoulders back. Six months of practice had taught her how to do this without her hands shaking.

The Golden Gala was a monument to the peace that had redefined the century - humans and werewolves mingling beneath crystal chandeliers, Alphas dining with senators, pack elders shaking hands with CEOs. The old divisions had been buried beneath money and compromise.

Lily knew better. She had been married to civilization for five years. She knew exactly how savage it looked in a tuxedo.

"Lily! Over here!"

Sera emerged from behind a topiary, balancing two champagne flutes. She pressed one into Lily's hand.

Sera had sandy brown hair, the same shade Lily's mother had once worn, though Lily's was auburn now - dyed to hide the jet black that ran through her mother's family. Sera's green eyes, magnified behind round glasses, were so like Lily's own. She was shorter, softer, but there was steel beneath the gentleness.

"You said someone wanted to meet me," Lily said.

"A buyer. He's been asking about your jewelry sketches for weeks."

Lily didn't drink. "I haven't touched my designs in months. Not since Elliot's lawyers stripped the Carrington name off everything I built."

"You posted those sketches online. People noticed."

"People slow down for train wrecks."

Sera leaned in. "I know the rumors about the pearls. But this man runs three luxury houses. If he likes your work, you might get your label back."

Lily's fingers tightened around the champagne flute. She thought of her mother's pearl necklace, the one thing she refused to sell. It hung beneath her gown, pressed against her heart. She would never take it off.

She thought of the sketches - the ones she'd posted late at night, desperate and sleepless. Sera had encouraged her. "Your work deserves to be seen, Lily. Even if you have to hide."

"Who is this buyer?" Lily asked.

Sera lowered her voice. "He's private. He's been asking about you for months. He wanted to confirm something."

"Confirm what?"

"That you're real. That your talent is real. He's been waiting a long time."

Waiting. Something about that word made Lily's skin prickle.

"His name?"

Sera hesitated. "Damien Hawke."

The name landed like a stone in still water. Lily had never met anyone named Damien Hawke. But something tugged at her memory. A whisper. A shadow. A feeling she'd been watched longer than she realized.

She pushed the thought away.

Across the ballroom, Elliot Ashton stood with his hand spread across Eloise Carrington's back. Magnetic in the way Alphas always were - too tall, too broad, too present. His grey eyes found Lily before she could look away, pupils bleeding to gold.

His wolf was scenting her. Even from thirty feet away.

"He's staring," Sera said.

"His wolf's confused," Lily replied. "Eloise marked him three months ago. The bond's supposed to be settled. Apparently his animal still remembers my shampoo."

Humans could not be fated. The elders had nearly stripped Elliot's title for marrying a human. He had fought for her once. Then when Eloise, whom had returned back from abroad, turned out to be his fated mate, the fighting became surrender.

Eloise noticed the staring. Her smile curved cold. She was a shapely blonde with icy blue eyes, her curves poured into blood-red silk. Gamma of the pack, daughter of a powerful family, Elliot's perfect match.

"She's coming over," Sera whispered.

"I'm not running from my stepsister."

Eloise arrived, her hand possessive on Elliot's arm. The mark on her neck pulsed silver. A brand. A claim.

Lily's stomach twisted. She pushed the memory down.

"Lily, darling." Eloise's voice dripped honey and arsenic. "I almost didn't recognize you without the bags under your eyes."

"And I almost didn't recognize you without my husband's hand on your ass." Lily kept her voice light. "Some things never change."

Eloise's smile sharpened. "Elliot was never really yours. You were a placeholder. A warm body his wolf tolerated until the real thing came along."

"Is that what you tell yourself when he says the wrong name in his sleep?"

Elliot's hand tightened. "Lily. Don't."

"Don't mention I found your wolf pacing outside my apartment last Tuesday? Don't talk about Eloise dragging you back to the pack house by the collar?" Lily's laugh cut like glass. "I'm not the one embarrassing you. Your bond is doing that all by itself."

Eloise's hand moved before anyone could stop it.

The wine hit Lily full in the face - sticky, room-temperature, soaking her emerald gown. The ballroom went dead silent.

Lily didn't wipe her face. She let it run.

"You just proved every word they say about you," she said, voice steady. "Cheap. Territorial. Desperate enough to mark a man who still wants what he threw away."

"Lily." Elliot's voice had gone rough, his wolf riding close to the surface. "Please."

"Please what? Pretend you didn't destroy my life? Forget you signed away my mother's company to buy her an engagement ring?" Lily stepped close, watching the gold swallow his eyes. "You look at me and see everything you gave up. It's eating you alive."

"It wasn't my choice. The elders - "

"The elders didn't hold the pen. You did."

Eloise yanked his arm. "We're leaving."

"Run along." Lily turned. "Your mate's barely holding it together, and I'd hate for him to shift in front of the press."

She made it to the valet stand before Elliot caught her wrist.

"Lily." His skin was fever-hot. "I made a mistake."

"Which one?"

"All of them." His thumb traced her wrist. She remembered the way his hand used to feel - warm, steady, safe. Then she remembered how he'd let go.

"Eloise is my fated mate. I can't fight it. But you were everything. Come back - as a consultant. A valued member of the pack. I'll get you a penthouse. Protection."

She pulled free. "A consultant. Beneath her. In the shadows."

"Lily - "

"You didn't leave me, Elliot." She slid into the driver's seat. "You lost me. And you don't get to find me again."

As she pulled onto the avenue, she noticed a black SUV across the street. Tinted windows. Watching.

She told herself it was nothing. Everyone in this city drove black SUVs.

But her hands shook harder.

The rain came down hard on the interstate. Lily gripped the wheel, wine still sticky on her face, ribs aching.

She thought of her mother's necklace, pressed against her heart. The sketches. The name Damien Hawke.

Sera's words echoed. "He's been watching your career for years. Since before you married Elliot. He's been waiting for the right moment."

Lily had laughed. "Waiting for what?"

Sera had smiled. "For you to be free."

The black SUV appeared in her rearview snapping her out of her thoughts. It had been there since the gala. Now it was back, riding too close. Lily changed lanes. It followed. She sped up. It surged forward.

The first hit slammed her rear quarter-panel - metal screaming, the sedan fishtailing. The second impact crushed the driver's side, and the wheel tore from her hands.

The guardrail came up fast. The car flipped. Glass shattered. The world turned to noise and blood.

She ended up hanging from the seatbelt, one eye blurred red, her shoulder screaming. Rain poured through the shattered windshield.

Through the cracked glass, a man stood in the rain. Just standing. Watching.

Not Elliot. Not a werewolf. But something about him - ancient, patient, hungry... predatory - made her blood run cold.

"Please," she whispered, tasting blood. "I don't want to die like this. Not while they're still laughing."

He walked toward her, shoes silent on wet pavement. When he crouched by the window, the air dropped below freezing. Her breath fogged.

His face was half-hidden in shadow, but his eyes were unmistakable. And beneath the hunger, something that looked almost like relief.

"Lily Carrington."

She flinched. He knew her name.

"I've been waiting a long time for this moment."

"Who - who are you?"

He reached through the broken window, his gloved fingers brushing her cheek.

"You asked me a question once," he said softly. "Years ago. You probably don't remember."

"I don't - "

"You asked if anyone would ever see you. Not Lily Carrington. Not the heiress. Not the Luna. You."

Her breath caught. She had written that in a sketchbook when she was sixteen. A note to herself. How did he know?

"Help me..."

His expression changed.

"Do you want to live?"

"Yes."

He raised his wrist and bit into it. Dark blood welled from the wound.

Lily stared at him. "What is that?"

He said nothing. He pressed his wrist to her lips.

"Drink."

She hesitated.

"Trust me."

That was all.

She drank.

The blood was warm. The only warmth left in the freezing wreckage. It spread through her like fire.

Her shoulder stopped hurting. Her ribs began to knit. The darkness receded.

The blood was warm. The only warmth left in the freezing wreckage. It spread through her like fire.

She tried to focus on the stranger's face but her vision was blurry.

"Who... are you?"

He looked down at her.

"Sleep."

His fingers brushed her hair away from her face.

"You'll have your answers soon enough."

Her eyes closed.

The darkness took her.

Not far from the wreckage, the man in the black SUV lowered his phone.

"She's done. No survivors."

He never saw the stranger carry Lily away. He never saw the rain freeze beneath their feet. He never saw the black hawk circling above the wreckage. And he never saw the woman's fingers twitch once in the stranger's arms.

Will you…die for me? No, no. That’s too simple. Will you, live for me?

BETRAYED. MURDERED. REBORN.

Lily Carrington was Luna of the Silver-Crest Pack - until her Alpha husband and stepsister shattered her world in a single blood-soaked night. Stripped of everything, she was forced off a rain-slicked highway by the very wolves she once called family.

The world mourned the “disgraced human Luna” in a closed casket.

But death could not hold a Queen.

Rescued from the wreckage by Damien Hawke - the immortal CEO of ACE Consortium, and ruler of something far darker than business - Lily wakes to a terrifying bargain: become his bride, his shadow, his weapon… and he will help her reduce every last one of her enemies to ash. Bound by a blood oath that burns hotter than vengeance, she accepts.

By day, she is Phoenix Summers: a fierce fashion mogul clawing her way back to power.
By night, she is Lianna Black-Hawke: the elusive gothic wife of Damien Hawke - and something far more dangerous than anyone suspects.

But her past refuses to stay buried. As Eliot’s obsession reignites and Damien’s possessive love tightens like chains, Lily learns the truth: revenge always demands a price. And some prices ask for a sacrifice no Queen should ever have to make.

In a world where pack law, corporate empires, and ancient magic collide - one woman will rise.

The only question left is:
Will she burn alone… or will she burn the whole world down with her?
