Three Rivals

Chapter One

Chapter One

Aug 08, 2024

It has been a month since Peter went missing, and I was starting to get desperate. The cops had not found anything, and it was time to take matters into my own hands. Peter and I were childhood friends, but there were two other people with whom we used to be close. Alek and Chase. The four of us used to always be together, until high school. We went to a party, and there was a huge fight between the four of us. Alek, Chase, and I went our separate ways, but Peter continued to stay friends with all three of us. We were in college now. Now that Peter was gone, I noticed that Alek and Chase fought a lot more. I fought with them as well. We were all stressed out about losing Peter, but now I needed them. I had to find out what happened to my best friend.

I sent them both a text to meet me at the park, and I was surprised when they both arrived. "Jayden, what have you decided to waste our time with now?" Chase asked, brushing his brown hair out of his eyes. His green eyes glared at me. Chase was always straight to the point. I used to like that about him when we were friends, but now it just fills me with anger.

"Peter is missing, and I want to know why. I'm sure you both do as well. He was a friend to all of us after all. I need your help to find him. We can work together and maybe figure out what happened. After that, we can all go our separate ways again." I explained. Chase and Alek were silent for a few seconds.

"Only for three days. We can search for three days. If we find something, we can continue to search. If not, then this was a waste of all of our time." Alek answered. He was always one to compromise, but his plan was a good one. Chase and I agreed.

"Then we start now. I want to know what happened to Peter. I was thinking we can find his recent texts and calls. His phone was taken into the sheriff's office as evidence. We need to get our hands on it." I explained. I always went for the extreme option.

"What you are suggesting is a crime. If we were to get caught, I would get kicked off the football team. Alek would get kicked off the basketball team, though he isn't any good at it anyway. We would all get arrested." Chase responded. Alek was glaring at him now. They had always been great at sports, unlike me.

"I say we do it. I care more about my friend than a sport, and you should too." Alek directed towards Chase. Then, he turned to me. "Besides, we can just blame Jayden if we get caught." Alek continued, gesturing towards me.  rolled my eyes.

"Fine." Chase groaned. We walked to the Police station, and I explained the plan. When we arrived, I asked the cops where the bathroom was and walked down the hallway. I heard Alek and Chase frantically talking to the cops. They made up a lie about someone following them, and all the attention was on them. Instead of going to the restroom, I slipped into the room where the phone was kept. I slipped my school bag off and pulled out my laptop. I plugged Peter's phone in and started to transfer all his data. I was terrified somebody would walk in, but Alek and Chase were great actors. The cops were more concerned about them.

When the transfer was done, I put the phone back with the evidence, and I slid my bag back on. I rejoined Alek and Chase, trying to look as upset as they looked. Eventually, we left the station. "Please tell me you got it," Alek complained. His snow white hair was covering his brown eyes, but I could hear panic in his voice. I didn't have to see his face.

"I did. You doubt me too much. Let's go back to my place." I responded. We quickly walked back to my place. My mom was shocked when the three of us walked through the door together. She used to see all four of us together, but this is the first time she has seen all three of us together without Peter. I had to keep up the hope that Peter would be back.

"Hi, boys. Oh, you three must be going through a lot. I'll bake you all some cookies. It's so nice seeing you three back together after all of this. It's hard to watch Jayden go through something like this, knowing I can only do so much. I'm sure you boys can help each other out so much. After all, you were all very close with Peter." My mom ranted. The three of us eventually managed to escape her and get to my room.

Alek picked up a framed photo from my nightstand and gasped. Chase quickly went to investigate, and he froze. "You kept this. Why?" Alek asked. I snatched the photo from him. It was a photo of the four of us. It was taken a month before the fight, and we all got it printed out and put in matching frames. It was the last photo of all four of us together as friends.

"Sometimes I like to hold on to happy memories. Now stop touching my stuff and sit down. We have messages to go through." I responded. Alek looked embarrassed, and Chase looked ashamed. Both of them sat on my bed without protest. I sat in the middle of them and pulled out my laptop.

"Hey, do we have to look at his last messages with each of us?" Alek asked. He was looking everywhere, but at Chase and me. I glanced at Chase, wondering if he knew anything, but he gave me the same confused look back.

"Yeah, we want to be thorough. Why? What are you hiding?" Chase interrogated. Alek only shrugged, which made me more suspicious. I flipped open my laptop and clicked on the file with Peter's messages. The five most recent people to text him were me, Chase, Alek, Peter's mom, and a person whose contact name was Unknown. "So we should start with us and do Unknown last. I feel like Unknown will lead us into more stuff." I said.

"Which is why we should skip us and go straight into Unknown," Alek replied. He was pulling at his nails and avoiding eye contact. Chase reached over and clicked on the messages between Peter and Alek. "That's personal," Alek complained.

"So are the texts between Peter and I or Peter and Jayden, but neither of us is complaining," Chase responded. He read one of Alek's texts, and he went still. "Oh shit. I had no idea." He whispered. Alek looked mortified. Chase slid the laptop to me.

I think something is wrong with me, Peter. I can't get over them. I'm so in love that it's pathetic. Is it even normal to be in love with two people? I mean, they hate me now. I should hate them, but I can't. Besides, I'm pretty sure they're both straight. This is all so confusing. I need your help. Please text me back.

That was the last text Alek sent to Peter before he went missing. Peter never got the chance to respond. Alek never got the help he needed. "Who is this text about?" Chase asked, snapping me out of my thoughts. Alek didn't respond. "Is this about Jay and me?" Chase asked. He hadn't called me that nickname in a while.

Alek refused to look at us. "You weren't supposed to see that. Besides, I got over it." Alek responded. I let that sink in. Alek was in love with us less than a month ago. I had no idea how long he had been in love with us for. I didn't believe he was over us. "Can we move on to Unknown now?" Alek continued, wiping his eyes. Chase and I nodded, allowing the subject to be changed for now. We could go back to that after figuring out who Unknown was.

I clicked on Unknown and scrolled to the top. Alek, Chase, and I all looked at the laptop and started to read. The unknown person had been texting with Peter up until a week before he disappeared. The person told Peter that they admired him and envied him. They told him that they went to school with him. They told him they were at the party. They told him that they would keep him safe, but never from what. They probably are the reason Peter is missing.

I slowly shut my laptop. "We have a start." I breathed. "We have to find out who Unknown is, and then we have to find out what they did to Peter. To start, we need a list of everyone who was at the party. I know that there were only 100 people allowed on the guest list. There were 101 people there, counting the host. We need to find every picture from that night, and we need to get all 101 names." I responded.
