I move around quickly, my black raven hair in my face as I hide behind an old trash can. Patrols pass me before one turns and sniffs the air, his eyes narrowing as I hold my breath. Go away, go away, go away. I think as he shrugs and keeps walking.

I move from around the trash can and hurry into the next alley as I hear two patrols yelling and someone yelping in pain. they were caught. Have to be more careful. The Lord caught someone stealing from the food carts. Extra patrols lately.

I think as a guard passes me and I back pedal and hide in the shadows. shit shit shit. why didn't he see me? I think as I look past the corner, seeing the guard turn the corner.

I sigh before looking around and heading into one of the abandoned houses, the steps nearly falling apart as I jump through the window and the floor groans at my weight.

Don't break through. Please. I think as I hurry to the kitchen, trying to be quiet as I open the cabinets to only find one can of peaches. I curse and grab it before I stuff it in my bag.

I head to the fridge when a light is flashed into the window, making me duck as my heart hammers. I hear feet shuffling before the light goes away. I go to the counter as mice scurry away from something; making me shudder and almost gag.

I peek up from the counter and see no one. what was that?
