A man watches cars pass his sitting body on a dirt road. He was supposed to meet his girlfriend, but she has not arrived. He digs into the pocket of his faded, blue jeans and pulls a lighter out of it. A homemade cigar is in his shirt's pocket. The digits of his left hand wrap around the cigar, and he slides it into his mouth. He lights the cigar and the smoke rises to the still, tall grass next to him.
His girlfriend appears next to him with a little girl with dark, brown hair. "Who is she?" He asks. "She is my half-sister and my father is making me take care of her." The girl with indigo hair says.
"That sucks."
"It really does. What are you smoking?"
"It is none of your business."
"Come on tell me, please Jake."
"Do not nag me. I do not know what it is. Charlie gave it to me."
"You accepted something from that dirty snob? He thinks he is better than everyone. He is going to expect something from you."
"How do you know that? You do not know him, Maple."
She shook her head and walked away from him. Her sister sat on the ground next to him. She looked up at him and tilted her head. "Why are you smoking? Smoking is bad for you, that is what I learned at school." The little girl said. He looked at her big, brown eyes. "I am not in the mood, kid. Go find your sister and leave me alone." He says.
"She will come back so I will wait for her here."
"When I was in elementary school, they taught me that strangers are dangerous. I am a stranger to you. So, you should leave me alone."
"You are a loser! Do you know what you want to do with your life? Of course you do not know and to make matters worse you are smoking and you are in high school!"
"Shut up! I am eighteen years old. It is legal."
"Just because something is legal does not mean that it is good for you!"
"Stop yelling."
"No, you want me to runaway like my sister did, but I will not because I am stronger than her Mister Boogeyman!"
He threw the cigar on the ground and stomped on it with his black boot. He closed his eyes and pressed a finger on the center of his forehead. He stood up and she stood up, too. His eyes opened as he started walking in the direction Maple went. The little girl's neck length hair glided through the air as she began to run to catch up with him. He sees Maple leaning into the window of a blue car. Charlie smiles as she gets into the car.
He abruptly, stops walking. The little girl stops and looks at his fisted, shaking hands. "Why are your hands shaking?" She asks. "Your sister is going to ruin everything." He says.
"How is she going to do that?"
"She is going to bother someone I know, that is how she is going to ruin a friendship."
"My father really likes the guy driving that car. What was his name? Yes, it is Charlie."
"How do you know him?"
"He is my Maple's boyfriend. They go to the movie theatre together and they pick me up from school. He does not talk a lot. One time..."
"Wait, he is not her boyfriend."
"Yes, he is that is what she told father!"
"I am her boyfriend."
"No, you are not. He is her boyfriend! She would not lie to father because he always finds out the truth. He always does!"
"Shut up!"
"You are a mean person!"
As she said that a strong wind gust threw him in the grass. "What was that?" He says as he stands on his feet. "Something is wrong with that little girl and her sister." He whispers to himself. A tall, dark shadow appears behind him and pulls his soul from his mouth. "No, do not kill him." The little girl says as she runs towards them. The shadow throws his soul back into his mouth and his lanky body falls back on the waist height grass. His thin, brown bang separates as the back of his head hits the ground. "Do not give up, now Mr. Boogeyman. I have not finished playing with you." She says and then giggles.
He wonders if he is dreaming or if the cigar is messing with his brain just before he goes to sleep. He wakes up and he finds himself being dragged by an unseen force behind Maple and her sister. "How much more do you think father needs?" The little girl asks Maple. "I do not know, Honeydew. I really do not know." Maple says.
"You remember what happened to him last time."
"He is not going to fade away, again. I promise, Honey."
"He is right you should stop worrying about him and eat some food. You are so thin. You look like a starved vampire."
"Father, I go outside. I have a tan."
"No, you do not."
Jake squirms and kicks. His legs drop to the ground. "Let him devour Jake, Honey." Maple says. "Why?" Honeydew asks.
"We do not know how much he has to eat, and he only ate two souls. He is not even visible, right now."
"Jake is fun to play with."
"I will find another loser for you to play with. Let father eat his soul."
"Okay. You have to promise me that you will find another toy!"
"I promise."
Jake's soul oozed out of his mouth into a bright, blue ball. Jake's green eyes stared at the moon in the sky. A pale man with brown eyes and brunette hair appeared next to Honeydew. "So, he needs three souls this time." She says to her sister.
