It was mid summers when Violette decided it was time for her to go to a different place, a place where she could start her new journey, open a new chapter of her life, and maybe a better one.
‘Vivi breakfast is ready!’ called her mom downstairs.
‘Coming, mom.’ replied Violette as she placed the last item in her bag.
As she went downstairs, she saw the breakfast her mom had prepared for her and her dad, who was already there, arranging plates for them all. ‘Morning Vivi, are you done with your packing?’ said her dad as he kept the newspaper aside.
‘Oh yeah, I am almost done with it. My flight is in few hours, hope I'll be able to make it soon’
‘Don’t worry honey, you’ll reach there on time,’ Her mom’s voice came, nearer with each word, as she brought a plate of sausages to the table.
Vivi's mother cooked sausages and spaghetti for them, as it was her favorite. This was the last time she will be having breakfast with her family. She would miss her family and these small moments of having and sharing meals together in peace. They tended to have this habit of never speaking during meals, which made it actually peaceful. After having a hearty breakfast and tossing her dishes in the sink, Violette went back to her room to see it for the very last time. She loved her room a lot, it gave her many bittersweet memories. Vivi did not have any such close friends whom she could see for the last time before setting out on her journey, she had already met her aunt who lived few hours away alongwith her parents the previous week. The first thing she saw was the mirror, hanging on the wall by a nail. A girl with long brunette hair, a pair of loose fitted clothes and sun-tanned skin stood before the mirror. She reminisced those times when she used to spend hours in front of this very same mirror, rehearsing her graduation speech. She looked up to see her graduation photo framed on the wall, her mom and dad stood beside her as she posed for the picture with her certificate. Vivi stood up as she had a small debate in her mind whether to keep the frame in her bag or to leave it here for her parents ( as she already had that picture in her phone gallery).
'What are you doing up there Vivi your taxi is already here!' her mom shouted. She was always impatient in those sort of things, she was the type to reach four hours before the flight.
‘I am coming Mom,’ Vivi replied, picking up her luggage which was a tad bit too heavy as she was struggling a bit to bring it downstairs.
‘Lemme help you hun,’ her father said, as he gently took the luggage from her grasp and gave her a reassuring smile, as he placed it in the boot of the taxi. Violette's mom hugged her, her dad joined them a second after. Vivi could feel her mom's tears on her shoulder, warm and dampening her cloth.
'I will miss you so so much Vivi,’ her mom said wiping her tears, pulling away to look at Vivi's face.
While her dad was trying hard to keep a warm smile on his face: ‘Take care of yourself hun,’ he said patting her arm.
‘Don’t worry, I will be fine I promise.’ She tightly hugged her parents one last time, her eyes moist with all the emotions she was feeling. She turned to sit in her taxi reluctantly. She looked out the window, the view of her mom and dad waving her goodbye and the house she grew up in, she took it all in for the last time. As the taxi moved forward leaving her parents and her home behind, she felt her insides twisting and turning. The feeling grew the more as she felt she was going farther away from her home. Violette held back her tears, she did not want to break down, it would make her look feeble and embarrasing, she'd never want that. But it had to be done; she had to leave her home, it did not matter whether she felt homesick. When Vivi decided it would be a great idea to start from scratch in a new country, she never thought of the things she would have to sacrifice for it. She had to leave her parents and her home behind to make a new start. She thought only about the happy beginings and never about the hardships.
"But," she thought to herself, this was not the time to feel discouraged. Now that the decision had already been acted upon, she needed to stop her mind to wander towards the worse end of the situation. She could still keep contact with her parents, this was not the medieval times where there were no means of fast communication. As she kept answering to the questions to all the problems she had been thinking about, Vivi started to feel less nervous with every answer she gave herself. It was always her dream, her passion, that she wanted to contribute in the betterment of the world, even if it was as small as it could be. Vivi now just sat there looking outside the window watching the traffic, as her mind flashed back to the moment, when she was jumping around squealing with happiness with the scholarship letter from South Korea in her hands. She felt one end of her mouth curl up into a smile as she remembered it. The twisting and turning inside her had now fully come to rest. The taxi screeched to a halt. The airport came to view, she had finally reached one step closer to her destination.
