On the planet Lupus, it is a quiet night at a Republic base. Guards are on post, looking out for any intruders. So far, nothing is happening and this leaves the Guards quite bored. One of the starts to yawn before asking their fellow Guard a particular question.
“So, what exactly are we guarding anyway?” Asks the First Guard, bored and tired from the hours of night watch.
“From what I’ve heard, there’s a T1M-B3R unit in that base. Troops managed to recover it from a bunch of Rebel punks.” Replied the Second Guard.
“Really? Seems a bit much for a simple timber wolf. Those units are more common than you think they are.” Said the First Guard, confused by all the extra security for something insignificant.
“Well, here’s the interesting part. This particular wolf is shall we say special. Apparently, this thing can” The Second Guard says before being interrupted by an explosion.
The Guards watch as the mech in question breaks out of containment and starts gunning down the auto turrets. The Guards question whether it’s a Federation attack as well as who is driving the mech. Troops start to open fire on the metal wolf as it runs away and jumps over the gate. Just then, a stray turret shot lands a direct hit on the timber wolf, shredding the cannon clean off. Before the troops could call for back up, the wolf runs off into the darkness, never to be seen.
The next day, a Canid with white fur and brown spots on his eyes, ears, back, and rear works at Robinsons workshop, repairing a mech that had come in for maintenance. The Canid takes a few seconds off of his work and looks at the screen playing a promoting a tournament for the most famous sport in the galaxy, mech battles. He dreams of the day when his name is revered alongside the all-time greats of this sport. His daydream is cut short his name is called by his boss.
“Hey! Lucian Tropos! What are you doing standing there dosing off?!” Barked Lucian’s boss.
“Nothing Ben. Work’s almost done anyway. Just need to install this actuator and we can send this mech back to its driver.” Says Lucian, trying to avoid making Benjamin angrier.
“Well hurry up! Your shift is almost finished.” Says Benjamin before returning to his office.
After Lucian installs the actuator, he clocks out for the day only to be met by his coworker Albane. Lucian is spooked by the black and white Felis and drops a signed photo of famous mech driver. Albane picks up the photo and hands it back to Lucian before starting a chat with him.
“Let me guess, old man Benjamin caught you eyeing that mech tournament?” Asks Albane.
“Yeah. I mean, I already do so much work repairing and maintaining mech. He could at least let me have a moment to appreciate the greatest sport in the galaxy!” Lucian says, frustrated at his boss.
“Look, I know the guy’s got a stick up his ass but let’s be honest here, he knows why you repair mechs and don’t drive them. You suck at driving.” Albane says with the subtlety of a jackhammer.
“I know but I’ve always dreamed of being a mech driver. Entering tournaments, battling though opponents, entertaining the crowd, what’s not to love?” Lucian says as he puck on his coat.
“I get it. But dreams can only get you so far. Unless you improve at driving a mech, you won’t even make it past the first round. But don’t worry, I know you can do it little pup.” Albane says before clocking in for his night shift.
As the sun finally sets, Lucian makes his way back to his apartment. Along the way, he passes by a few wanted posters for a band of rebels who betrayed the Republic. He pays no mind to the posters for something else catches his attention. Off in the distance, Lucian notices what looks to be a timber wolf unit. He approaches the mech and sees that it’s covered in blaster holes and its back weapon was missing. Improvising, he ties the mech to himself using a spare cable and runs on all fours back to the workshop. He makes it back and brings the mech in for repairs much to the surprise of Albane.
“By Fenris’ beard! What the hell Lucian?!” Albane says upon seeing the massive metal wolf.
“No time to explain. Let’s just patch this thing up and figure out who the driver is.” Says Lucian who grabs his tools to repair the mech.
The two spend all night repairing the mech and replacing the damaged parts. They even removed the weapon port and placed a thruster pack in its place. By the time the sun rose the next day, Lucian had fallen asleep in the driver’s seat. Albane leaves to check out for the day, leaving Lucian in the mech. Suddenly, the mech begins to move on its own. The timber wolf breaks through the workshop and runs off into the wilderness. When Lucian wakes up, he realizes that the mech was moving despite the fact that he was asleep. Lucian tries desperately to get the mech to stop, pulling levers and pushing buttons sporadically. All the while, the mech gets closer and closer to a cliff before grinding to a halt. Lucian takes a sigh of relief upon finally getting the timber wolf to stop. Before Lucian could get a word out, the mech speaks.
“Ah. I didn’t notice you where there. Sorry about that. I am F3N-R1R but you can call me Fenrir if you like.” Says Fenrir, much to the surprise of Lucian.
