One night on Spring Break, my friend and I decided to go out to this bar called, Cabana in Malibu California. It was my favorite place to be during a perfect sunset. I loved the feeling of the warm golden sun hitting my cheek as the glow radiated over the ocean.
There were two guys there that kept trying to buy us drinks. I was a little reluctant at first but said yes because one, I left all my credit cards at home and two, My friend thought one of the guys was attractive. So we let them buy us as much as we wanted.
As the night went on, and the drinks kept coming, I could notice one of the guys becoming aggressive towards my friend and everyone around him.
"Back off!" I said as I shoved myself in between them so she could breathe.
"What?" The guy said sarcastically. "We're just having fun. Don't be so sensitive." When he said that, my blood began to boil and I was ready to fight him with everything in me.
All of a sudden, before my fist could make contact with this guys chin, a man came up to us and said, " Is there a problem here?" I think he was one of the many security guards they had at the restaurant.
"This man is harassing us, sir, " I said, " He needs to go"
Thankfully, they didn't want to cause a bigger scene so they walked out on their own but not before calling both me and my friend a few choice words.
As the night went on, everything started to become hazier. None of us had ever drunk this much before and forgot that we live two hours out from Malibu.
The smartest thing we thought to do was call an Uber. There was no way in hell we were going to drive ourselves home, and I'm not okay with taking the bus at 2 o'clock in the morning.
I was surprised to see the Uber was approximately 5 minutes away from the restaurant. So we grabbed all our belongings and stood by the curb where it says Uber Pick Up.
Once the Uber pulled up to the curb, we get in and I immediately smell the strong scent of Alchohol. As I looked up, my body went numb as I noticed the man in the front seat.
It was one of the men who wouldn't stop harassing us at the restaurant. He looked at us with the most deceitful and cunning expression that only read as criminal.
Next, he locked our doors so we couldn't get out and sped off. Hitting 80 MPH which caused both my friend and me to hit our heads on the back of the car window.
All that was coursing through me was sheer panic. I was thinking about all the girls I've seen on the news that have ended up missing or worst. And it all started like this.
At this point, we had two options:
We could try to beat the door down, fail, and let him take us to a second location. Or we can fight!
I had no time to think without moments to spare, I jumped over to the passenger seat, reached over and started hitting and punching as he was driving.
We were swerving on the freeway, but I didn't care. I needed to draw attention. I needed someone to see us.
"Get off me!" He yelled as he tried to push me off of him. But because of the adrenaline that ran through me, my body was at it's strongest point.
My friend broke the window with her heel and was able to get the attention of the Police which had pulled over someone for speeding. They quickly jumped in their car and sped after us without hesitation.
The drive was cut short by us crashing into the bushes close to the end of the freeway.
Everything went black and all I could hear sirens and people yelling.
When I wake up, I'm surrounded, by monitors and I'm connected to an I.V. I must have lost a lot of fluid because I looked at the nearby trashcan to see 3 saline bags in it.
I look to the side to see my friend still very much out from the hit. I wonder if she even had a chance to open her eyes since last night? The side of her head was pretty bruised. She also has a broken leg.
As I lay here in this hospital bed, I would have never thought in a million years that anything like this would ever happen to us. I would see this kind of thing on the news and never think that I would be one of them.
I guess the truth is no one is exempted from tragedy. You wish and Pray that everything will be okay once you walk out the safety and comfort of your home. But it's never guaranteed.
What happened to us last night was not normal. and I pray with everything in me that it never happens again.
No to me.
Not to her.
Or anyone.
But is that really guaranteed...
