Opening
"To be a Source is the greatest honor in our kingdom. Without Sources, our Hosts would never be able to fight the corrupted. Thus, our kingdom would be in constant peril."
Light pours in from the window, softly landing on the mahogany table in front of me. The closer we get to selection, the more governess Triciana drones on and on about Sources and Hosts. I understand the importance. I really do. But dear all things heavenly, the woman’s lectures are boring as hell. I drum my fingers against the table as she continues.
"As we get closer to your selection, you will be placed in a class, the most important being Sun or Moon. This is based on how you draw your power. There are many different lesser classes and a few extinct ones. However, we will only focus on the main two"
She looks at me meaningfully. As if making sure the importance of the classes is engrained in my mind.
"Your mother was sun and held enormous power. However, classes are not genetic, and you could very well be placed in any of the others.”
I look at my governess with slight annoyance. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. I know my mother was super wonderful. Hell, she has a statue made in her honor. And what is she known for? Providing my father with power. That’s all she did. She didn’t raise a sword and fight corrupted. She stood there while he sunk his fangs in her wrist and then died.
Wap! A ruler lands against the top of my hand causing me to wince in pain. Fuuuuck that hurt. I hold the curse inside knowing id be given another if I had the audacity to curse in front of her.
"Lady Lilith pay attention. You leave in a week to find out your place in our kingdom. You need to be prepared!"
The kingdom of Sapphirine. Ruled by the beloved king Philip with his queen Mariana. Her class is dawn, meaning she draws her power literally at dawn. You cannot draw power outside of your class. Hosts are the ones with the cool abilities. They have magic power and spells to increase their damage. They are who fight the corrupted.
No one knows how corrupted came about just that they are here now. They used to be normal monsters. Goblins, basilisks, trolls and so on. Then one day they are shrouded in a thick black fog, their powers amplified, and they become aggressive beyond the norm.
What’s worse is that they can infect other monsters with a single bite. The only saving grace is that they seem averse to sunlight. Making homes in underground lairs, some burrow inside caverns miles below the surface. The deeper the burrow, the harder the hunt. But hunt we must, as they will increase their size and attack villages. I shudder thinking about the poor village recently massacred by corrupted.
So, in summary, Hosts can use abilities to increase their speed and strength, which puts them on par with corrupted. However, they cannot replenish their own magic. Sources using their classes fill up on magic and the Hosts can take from them. Using specialized fangs that separate blood and magic. Sources have no other abilities making them nothing more than glorified storage containers.
Everyone is convinced I’ll be a Source. Its either that or a 'Neither'. Neither’s have no abilities at all. No magic either. But they keep our country running by taking on jobs. Most bakers, blacksmiths and servants, etc. are Neithers. It’s the most common placement.
Nobels who are Neither’s usually take administrative work for the palace. If I could choose, I’d be a Recorder. Follow the groups of Hosts and Sources as they fight corrupted and record the events. Sound much more fun than having a parasite leech power from my body. Not that I get any choice in the matter.
