The night faded to early in the morning, and in the wake, Cole stirred, rubbing his irritated eyes. He gazes at his nearly rundown apartment, which could never compare to a house or anything; he goes to school and takes care of his two siblings, a girl and a boy, while his parents hustle on the side to make ends meet. Cole manages as the oldest, barely able to keep things balanced. Ace never had friends or anyone to talk to; he was alone, under so much pressure, as much as he longed for such a fantasy, he never had the luxury of time.
Late in the afternoon, Ace is less responsible and lazier than he should be. His father was killed in a car crash when he was young. His father was a man of shady business and was never home, so Ace never really remembered him; all he knew was that he was an average drinker. As the father's death came, so did the life insurance. Hundreds of thousands of dollars were handed to Ace's mother. His mother couldn't care less and spends her time sobbing and slowly starving herself, and was slowly dying. Ace tried to be more responsible for his mother, but he is still young and can only give her companionship. His mother was famous in the community, but instead of being popular in school, he was hated, bullied, and shamed, seen as a rich snob rather than a kid who had just lost his father. Many rumors spread like wildfire, and parents would whisper and gossip around him, but to Ace, rumors were rumors. But Ace realized that when his teachers turned a blind eye to the constant bullying, he had to deal with it, and all he could do was care for his mother and do his best in school.
Colen and Atlas were best friends at the start of middle school. Unsuspectingly, when they began to fall apart due to harsh arguments in their high school years, they let it happen, and soon enough, Atlas moved away. Neither had seen the other in years. One day, Colen felt a familiar gaze, one that he'd rather forget.
