When a deranged god hunts you, you can wait to die or ascend.
Anele has lived half her life alone, an orphaned witch who's had to learn about her powers on the fly, fending off acid-breathing lions, horned serpents that eat elephants like mice, and vultures large enough to hide a village in their wingspan. When one of the most dangerous creatures in the Spires catches her scent, she flees across the desert, knowing that she's only counting down the days before the pettygod hunts her down and rips her soul out. It's only a matter of time.
Still reeling from their greatest failure, Wenyanga can't help but see the beaten, bloodied young witch that stumbles across their path as a second chance waiting to be taken. She'll need more than mentoring, though, even from a gravemage as powerful as themself. The shape of the witch's soul could either kill them both or break every rule of magic in the Spires, unlocking the door Wenyanga has dedicated their life to throwing open.
Of course, before any of that, Wenyanga will have to face the failure that almost killed them. As for the young witch, well, all she has to do is learn how to kill a god. It's not the most impossible thing Wenyanga will have to teach her -- or the most dangerous.
Alone, the two of them are doomed by their own strange magic. Together, they might just tear the world apart.
