It was just another ordinary day in her average life, one more chore to be taken care of, one more obligation on her checklist.
Yet, she could sense something strange hovering in the air. Gem had a presentiment that the day ahead of her would bring something that would change her life forever. For better or for worse, she could not tell.
It could be felt in the stillness of the air, in the calmness of the river. The big event, one of those which change your life forever. She didn't know what that event would be, so she decided that she must stop thinking about it as it would happen in its own time.
She continued walking down the street thinking about all did things which happened to her, as she often did. Thinking about her cruel destiny which deprived her of a family member at an early age made her feel sad, but she couldn't stop her thoughts from swirling around in the labyrinth that was her mind. Her life was nice and ordinary and although she was happy and satisfied with it, she knew there was something missing, the most important thing, the love of her life.
Of course, she had the love for her family, but she wanted to meet the man who would make her heart tremble and who would make her feel like everything was possible.
She thought about her life as an empty shell, without deep feelings and even fun. She went to university, and she loved it. The feeling of achievement which she felt every time she learned something new and fascinating was one of the best things in her life, but she started wondering if that was all there was to life.
She saw happy couples all around her, and she envied them on their happiness and joy, but at the same time, she felt sorry for them because they were bound to get hurt.
With her mind burdened with those kinds of thoughts, she started crossing the bridge and suddenly something snapped her out of her pensive state. As it was early in the morning, she was surprised to see a man on the bridge near the fence. He looked a few years older than her. He had dark black hair, and he was pretty tall and well-built wearing blue jeans and a hooded white sweater. A picture of a guy looking like that and standing on the bridge like a statue in that time of day looked strange to her, so she just stood there for a moment eager to solve that mystery.
He didn't see her as she looked at him, but she saw in his eyes the sadness that couldn't be expressed in words. His gaze was fixed on the rippling water below like it was some kind of salvation a way out from all the sadness there was in the world. Then a thought crossed her mind.
He is going to jump I must stop him! But what could I do or say to prevent him from ending his life, I don't know anything about him. Well, I must do something!
So she started slowly walking towards him, making small noises on the way to let him know she was there without startling him or even speeding up his jump.
Upon hearing her approach, he startled probably surprised by the presence of another person at such an early time of the day.
It was his habit to come to that same spot on the bridge every time he had a problem or when he was just sad since no one seemed to understand him. They always considered him weird as he was different from the other boys, he was sensitive, which they considered bad for a guy. He was kind and rarely used bad language which was also strange to his mates.
There was also a lot of strength and bravery in him, always ready to help someone who was in trouble, but they seemed to disregard his strengths and focus on what they thought of as weaknesses instead.
But most of all, he was a gentleman, which was not a desirable quality among his friends and family because good and polite people were rare, and they feared anyone who was different.
At the moment Gem saw him, he was thinking how he would love to be free and happy as the river which flowed under that bridge and how nice it would have been to meet that special one who would love him and understand him, someone who would make his time spent on earth special.
He wanted with all his heart to meet his other half, get a nice job to support his family, and live happily ever after. But he had a hard time finding true love as he built a shield around his heart in order not to be hurt and now that shield was taking over his life.
Raising his eyes, John saw a beautiful girl looking at him with some strange mixture of fear, pity, and sympathy, so he started wondering why she looked at him like that, and then it hit him.
She thinks I m going to jump and that it is her duty to save me! But who is she and why would she even care? She must be one of those glory hunters who ''save'' people, so they could go brag about it on national television! It doesn't look like she is that kind of person but you never know these days. I may as well play the role.
Although he was shocked by his sarcastic thoughts and his strange decision, he decided to stick to it. Knowing he would probably regret it later he didn't care because at least something different would happen in his boring little life. That was when she finally spoke up.
