This comic going to is a nanopunk superhero story, with themes about identity, religion, intersectionality, and the dealing with consequences of coming out. It’s about a 12 year old (13 later in the story) girl named Renee Rivera who comes out to her family as trans 5 days after her birthday. After 9 months of familial turmoil, she’s caught in a car accident on the New Year’s Eve before 2016. That same night, an otherworldly being breaks through the city’s barriers. Renee’s encounter with this this Teratoid changes her life forever, giving her the power to control sound and, to ultimately come to accept herself despite what her family thinks. 15 year old Kani Cervantes, who experienced some similar hardships, also receives superpowers on the same night. The story follows their path to becoming superheroes, learning the secrets of their city, its past, and what lies underneath it all.
