Well Muscle Friend has been on a bit of a hiatus, due to me burning myself out on it and pushing myself to write, pencil, ink and color 2 pages each week.
Is this the end of the big guy? Is the helpful hazard done for? Probably not, but for the meantime he's taking a nap, and you might not want to wake him up...
Hopefully a new update sometime soon, and thank you to those subscribing despite the clear lack of updates, means a lot!
I think you're still forming the building blocks of the medium, and that's okay. Comics is illustration + writing, and each of those is its own long evolving process. I made some crappy stuff when I was younger, believe me. Like Frog Man, who was Spider-Man but with slime instead of webs... The most important thing is to be open to trying new things and learning from what you see.
Try the following:
-Absorb the classics, look into different comics out there (outside webcomics even) and take in what you can from them. From Spider-Man to Scott Pilgrim, get to know the medium well.
-Don't be afraid to copy, find something you like and attempt to recreate it, until you can take away certain parts of it and make that part of your whole thing. Don't just plagiarize though, that's not the right way.
-Get more familiar with certain principles like perspective and light and shadow, even the cartooniest cartoons abide by those laws. Using reference photos is not cheating, even pros do it.
-Look at the behind the scenes stuff, there are lots of online artists who post tutorials or process images, but also major ones too, seek those out, some of them are published in books not on the web. Also, in terms of writing, a lot of stuff about that is out there, on YouTube on podcasts, like people who work on Adventure Time explaining how some of the stuff in the show is born. All this stuff that's hidden is just as important as what you see in the end.
I've got a loooot to learn myself (can't draw a decent car), but with time it gets easier, so let's all keep at it. ;)
Whoa-ho-ho! You guys actually did it. You broke the 500 subscribers mark in less than a week! I am very grateful to all of you folks, as well as the Tapastic team for the super welcome. So on this special occasion I thought I'd ask you all a little question...
WHAT'S YOUR PROBLEM?!
Hold on... Let me explain: As you know, Muscle Friend is a man, uh, blue guy-thing, of the people! He's here for YOU!!! So go ahead, share some problems you might be facing in the comments, could be anything from tangled headphones to a tornado!
Who knows, it might inspire a future Muscle Friend episode! And there might be credit in it for ya?
