Vale is currently waiting outside Jabez’s office, the Greed Department’s Head Manager. He didn’t look particularly demonic, after spending many centuries with mortals he eventually became more comfortable walking around in his human form instead of ...the other one. He looked like a regular man who was in his early 30’s. He had neat slicked back black hair, a clean shaven face and a proud posture that gave him a regal and diplomatic air about him, probably one of the main reasons why politicians trusted him so much.
The past two decades have been really good to Vale. He had managed to corrupt the highest man in power by becoming his most trusted adviser. The man followed everything the demon suggested and after executing Vale’s long list of carefully planned schemes, direct military control was imposed throughout the country, this lasted for 15 long years. Civil laws and rights were suspended, people were robbed of their freedom ,and the nation was slowly falling apart. For Vale however, this meant it was a job well done.
But since greed he was, Vale wanted more. Instead of focusing on the empire he had just built, he wanted grander things, like four or five more countries under his command or maybe even a whole continent. He started giving more and more people political prowess, unaware that not all of them had the same plans as he did. Long story short, one of them secretly planned a coup while Vale was busy multitasking. A revolution began right under his nose and it was too late to stop it.
The people overthrew their leader and the country became better than it was before. The countrymen were given a renewed sense of freedom and democracy. Around the world measly mortals realized that they can work together and fight for what's right. New laws and policies that respected and protected citizens were being passed left and right. For some inexplicable reason, more people started going back to church. A small part of the world changed for the better and it was all because Vale gave power to the wrong man.
Vale was finally called inside the Head Office.
"Valentin, what have you done? According to the charts I’ve just received, there’s significantly more good in the world now than there was 20 years ago. Freedom too, you see this spike over here? That’s the amount of liberty you’ve added to humanity. You know I won’t tolerate this." Jabez said in a sort of weird growl.
“I didn't know that they were planning a coup! I had no idea!" Vale answered while looking down, he can't bear to look at his superior in the eye anymore, not after all the good he had done.
"Mhmm. I don't want to hear your explanation, you've done enough damage." Jabez sighed while folding the country’s local newspaper he had been reading.
“Sir! I can take it all back! Just….give me a few months!”
"Valentin, stop it.”
“Sir-” Valentin pleaded.
"I’ll be sending more “professional” demons for the high officials from now on. You are relieved from your position, effective immediately.” Jabez put Vale’s work ID on the palms on his hands and closed it. It was nothing but a mount of ashes when he opened them once again. He dusted his hands off for Vale to see.
"Also, " Jabez looked down sternly at him, "You can't stay in the presidential residences any longer, it's not your place anymore. Go rent an apartment somewhere."
"...and my job?" Vale gulped.
"It’s back to the basics with you... corrupt the commoners, the teachers, taxi drivers, whatever, you’ll find something to do. Just don't meddle with politics, understand?" Jabez motioned to the door which can be roughly translated to “JUST GET LOST”
And with that, Vale left.
