Lily stared blankly at Roger, wanting to tell him that it was too late and that he should bring it up in the morning. However, she could tell that he was desperate for an answer. This was important to him, and she wanted to close the gap between them. She had to live with him, after all.
"What is it?" Lily asked, standing in the doorway. While she wanted to be there for her new roommate, she didn't feel it was appropriate for him to enter. He sighed, his gears turning again. He was rethinking his decision, which started to exhaust Lily.
"There is something I need to tell you," he answered before walking to the living room. Lily watched him leave before realizing that she was supposed to follow him. He sat down in the chair across from the couch as Lily sat across from him. "I believe it was mentioned before that I had a partner, but I don't think anyone explained what happened. I need to explain before I can ask for your advice. I need you to understand."
"Okay," Lily replied, growing a bit nervous. Roger took a deep breath.
"My partner's name was Sonya, and she had the same sight that we have. We were work partners, but we fell in love in the later years. We worked really well together, in both senses. We were engaged for a time. You're actually in her old room, before our relationship," Roger began with a slight smile before his face turned dark. "That was before the incident, though. We were on a mission, like normal, when things went south. We were investigating a rogue jinn at the time, and, to be honest, we were getting sloppy. Both of our confidences were inflated, you probably would have thought us to be arrogant. Because of this, the jinn was able to get the better of us. It outsmarted us easily, but we couldn't see past our own noses to see it. We thought that we were in control until the bitter truth was revealed.
"The jinn had made a deal with me, saying that if I could solve a riddle then he would come quietly. If I lost, then he would take what was most important to me. I thought he was talking about physically, I didn't realize what he had intended, or I wouldn't have agreed. I believed that I could protect Sonya in any situation, and I was proved wrong. The jinn had created a physical riddle in the form of a puzzle. He created a grid of tiles in front of me and asked me to spell his name with three hints. Being the arrogant and reckless idiot I am, I laughed and ran to him, ready to strike. The jinn was less impressed and snapped his fingers. The next thing I remember was Sonya screaming. It wasn't a terrifying scream or wailing scream. It was earsplitting and soul breaking. I'll never forget the way she screamed, it's been burned into my soul. I turned around and found her on her knees and her head in her hands. I forgot about the jinn and ran to her. The screaming never stopped and the jinn got away.
"I had to call Kurt that something had happened to Sonya and I couldn't risk moving her. She was screaming so loud and horridly, I didn't want to draw more unwanted attention. Kurt appeared a few minutes later with a few more agents, who looked for traces of the jinn. He examined her as she remained motionless and continued to scream. He tried a few spells on her, but nothing could snap her out of it. He later told me that the jinn had messed with her mind. Any mention of me or the sight of me would reduce her to that screaming state. Even the memory of me would trigger the episode. I had to leave the room after that so Kurt could get to her. I heard the screaming a few times before there was a consistent silence.
"When I went back in, Kurt looked defeated as Sonya laid motionless on the floor. My first thought was that he killed her, but he quickly explained himself. He essentially deleted her memory of the organization and of me so that she could continue living. I was in shock when he told me this, but I was relieved that she was going to be okay. He had reinserted new memories and had called in for new documents to be made up. Kurt made her an experienced bartender, which had been her dream after we had finished our work at the organization. He had later sent out resumes for her to get hired, and set her up with a job within forty eight hours. She had a new life within a week, and Kurt kept her unconscious for the time being. He even found an affordable apartment for her.
"He put me in charge of her relocation and I watched to make sure that everything had gone smoothly. While I would like to think that he wanted to help me cope and move on, I think it was the easiest way to see if the spell worked. If she saw me at her bar and screamed, then we would know. Luckily, she didn't have an episode and she has been living happily for nearly two weeks now," Roger finished as Lily stared at him. She was shocked by the story, but she still wasn't sure what the story was for. He took another deep breath.
"I'm glad she's okay," Lily murmured, not sure what else she should say. Roger gave a small smile and shook his head.
"Me too..." he whispered, looking at his hands.
"What's the advice you need?" she pressed, realizing that it was almost three, and she wanted to go to bed.
"I've been going to her bar rather often, and I went earlier as my personal errand. She saw me today, and has noticed me coming in all the time. I think her memory might still be there. She asked me to keep coming to her bar, and she didn't seem to know why she asked," Roger replied as Lily suppressed a yawn. "Should I keep going back? Or should I stay away?"
"Stay away."
