I take Tana's hand and heave her disgruntled self over the wall. She started getting a little grumpy when she realized how many hills we'd have to climb up. That's the thing about suburbs here. Everything is uphill and people's properties are so big you have to walk five minutes to get to your neighbors house. But that's what makes these areas so intriguing as well. Because these places are so big it's easy to find a little opening where you can sneak in and join in the party.
I hear EDM music nearby. Great the party princess I'd been relying on to be ratchet tonight had not let me down. The party princess is a private school girl named Natasha. Like stereotypical girls from her background and resources she's very nouveau riche and will probably have her parents pay CEOs to give her a job when she finishes college. Since she knows this she spends and acts like there's no tomorrow because for her there really isn't. That works to our advantage because we can just pass off as two more random people at her drink-up. In fact tonight I won't even have to sneak through the low-side of their perimeter wall. Everyone is just walking through the gate.
Tana clutches me a little more closely. Maybe she's intimidated. I turn to see her in the light of the moon light. She looks murderous. Is she angry?
"Ummmm....are you pissed," I ask her suddenly aware that we just met and technically this would be the perfect scenario for a murder. She shakes her head.
"I just have resting bitch/murder face. I'm not exactly ecstatic to sneak into someone's house hey,"
"Was it that obvious?"
"Yes actually, very a la Paper Towns. I hope that you're of living it up doesn't solely consist of gatecrashing. The Hangover franchise kind of wore out its appeal,"
Well I guess she wasn't very popular at school. We walk right through the gates, the guards don't even give the tight-jeaned young man and girl with an oversized sweater another glance. This house must be really easy to rob. You couldn't pull of things like this in my neighborhood. Even though Natasha is about fifteen the party is full of people in their early and mid-twenties who can't pass up free booze...and pedophilia. As much as most of the guys are older, most of the girls here are between twelve and seventeen. Too young to hit the clubs so they hit the house party. I lead Tana to the lounge where a bunch of people are sitting and conversing. Sipping a few beers and chilling. My kind of crowd. People who value atmosphere and connection instead of just getting wasted. I don't know these people though so we probably can't just sit dow...
Tana sits down next to one of the guys and takes his beer. He looks taken aback. Hell, I must look taken aback. You don't just do that. She takes a shameless sip from the bottle and makes a face. "Beer always tastes like piss. Why do you like this stuff?"
The guy laughs and takes back his beer. " Well it tastes better the more you drink it,"
"I've been drinking it since I was a baby. My dad used to get drunk then feed me from his beer bottle," Suddenly all the attention is on her and the chill, vibey group of people laugh at her "joke". But with what little I know of her...she wasn't joking.
"Well maybe you shouldn't steal someone's beer from them," one of the girls in the group snicker. I look at her. She's one of those platinum blondes whose age could be anywhere from thirteen to thirty. I hope this won't turn into a cat fight. Tana adjusts her glasses and looks at the guy she took a beer from.
"Did you dislike my indirect kiss?" she asks. The guy looks struck for a second then scratches his head.
"Well I've never thought of it that way,"he says almost shyly. The blonde-haired girl holds back a scowl. The beer dude turns to me. "Hey, why don't you sit down and tell us your names?" he says ,"I'm Skylar"
"Tana and he's Sam," I sit next to her.
"I thought you were the socially awkward type," I whisper to her.
"You've known me for less than one night and you're already forming an image of who I am based on barely a glance." She whispers back.
"What?"
"Don't define me, I just am," she says a little more loudly.
"What's that?" Skylar asks eavesdropping.
"Each person is a unique surprise waiting to unfold and having expectation of how a person is meant to be inhibits a person from really experiencing the true depth of relationships," she tells him. He smiles at her.
"Intelligence is sexy," he says"Your at uni right?"
Tana shakes her head. "I nearly got expelled from high school actually,"
I raise my eyebrows, not just at the fact that Tana will probably get laid tonight but also that she was nearly expelled. She seems more of the type who would be a teacher's pet. I guess there really is no defining this strange creature.
