In case you are lost, Jeff cares about Nicholas, which in this case he makes Nicholas sleep again, so he can help Nicholas to know more what those dreams are trying to tell, and if they are related to Ada. Kinda jerk move, but it works. And I read on "petmd" that if a cat eats catnip, it works like a sedative, while if they smell it, it works like a drug
