"Hello, Kenny," those two words changed a lot in only seconds. Kenny knew things would officially be different from then on. "Well, the translator is working." He was finally able to get over his shock.
He looked back down at the tablet, wondering what else to say. "Let's see; instead of listing tons of words, I can just insert a dictionary. That way you'll be able to know what words to use to communicate with me," Kenny spoke as he typed on the words, then did just as he said he would.
It was relatively easy to connect the dictionary to the server, so Exo would not have trouble thinking of the correct word in English to use to communicate.
"Is it working? Can you understand me?" This time, Kenny did not type in his words. He simply spoke. While he would doubt technology on Earth would be able to reach such feats as this, he has a feeling that the aliens' technology can.
Exo's grin had disappeared, and he continued to look down at Kenny, almost with a look that appeared to be inquisitive. The type of gaze a researcher gives an endangered species; Kenny would know.
"Yes, it is working." Kenny rose a brow at Exo, honestly surprised. Sure, he expected the words, but he had not been expecting for Exo to use the correct grammar and pronunciations so easily. "Well, that's good." Kenny wasn't sure what to say.
It was indeed good that they can communicate now, but it's eerie how easy it was for it to work. "What the fuck did you just say!?" Before Kenny or Exo could exchange any more words, a shrill voice suddenly yelled from behind them.
Kenny froze and cringed all at once; then he reluctantly turned around to see Kat. Kenny wasn't surprised to see her glaring up at the queen alien. By now Kenny has just accepted the fact that their species are just naturally taller.
"You are so lively; it's rather amusing." The queen leaned down and grabbed Kat's chin firmly between her slim fingers that glowed a bright red on the tips and had no form of fingernails.
Kat scowled at the queen and yanked her chin back, putting some distance in between them. Kenny walked over and planted himself between the two, and not for the queen's sake.
"Kat," Kenny didn't say anything but her name. It's what he always does when she is about to do something dumb that she would regret later.
Granted, Kat has a right to be pissed, but Kenny knows that they must keep the peace between each other, not only for comfortability but survival as they could be the last humans in the universe.
"You can understand us now, so you can hear me loud and clear when I tell you I want a new shadow, partner, alien stalker, or whatever the hell it is you are to me." Kat took a few deep breathes, obviously trying to curve her anger.
The queen smiled, and just like Exo's mouth, her mouth also displayed razor-sharp teeth. "I have no one else to give you to," the queen replied simply. Now that Kenny wasn't trying to hold back Kat, he noticed just how strange the aliens' voices are.
Very lyrical, but their voices were also apathetic and impassive like they are void of emotions. Kenny knows that they aren't though, or at least Exo isn't. The alien has already shown feelings plenty of times, so maybe it is just a queen thing?
"I along with a few others volunteered to care and watch over one of you, and we were the only ones who were acceptable to be trusted with this responsibility."
Kenny along with the others of the crew glanced at their caretakers, wondering if the disgruntled aliens had genuinely willingly volunteered for this. Kenny doubted it, and he still doesn't know why Exo had him sleep in his room.
"Now that we are past that, I believe introductions are in order." The queen's gem seemed to glow brighter for a few seconds, and the other aliens in the room lined up beside her shortly after it stopped burning brightly.
Three stood on her right side, and four on her left hand. Exo was to the far left of the line of aliens. Just like the aliens had grouped up, the human crew huddled together, and some of them very subtly pushed Brooks to the middle of their little group.
"It is not possible to truly translate the sequences for our people into your language, but we will try our best. I know that you go by names, which we don't particularly use or have. Imagine a code or sequence of numbers, and that is how we know who is who."
To most of the crew, it didn't make sense. Why wouldn't they have names or titles for each other? Why only a sequence of numbers or digits? Kat lightly nudged Kenny, giving her friend a look that showed all the confusion that everyone was feeling.
"You may call me Quen, because it seems that you have gained a taste for calling me that," she looked at Kat, who fidgeted under the alien's gaze. "And I am indeed like a queen, in some ways but not all, but that will be detailed and explained later."
She turned to her right, where a masculine alien stood. If Kenny remembers correctly, this is the one that had escorted the queen earlier, on the other side of Exo. "This is Dax. He is similar to what your species calls a sibling, to me."
Now Kenny remembers, it's the same alien that had shaken Ollie like they had weighed nothing, so he kind of automatically dislikes this one.
Its markings are silver, contrasting greatly against its nearly midnight black skin. Standing beside Quen, they looked like opposites. Instead of having red eyes, this one had bright indigo eyes, with a black curved slit in the middle.
"And if some of you did not know, he is Brooks' caretakers." Kat gasped from beside Kenny, whirling around to look at Brooks. The small woman grimaced and nodded, showing that she had the displeasure of having him as her caretaker.
Everyone could see that Kat wasn't happy about it, even more so when she turned around to glare at Quen. She chose not to say anything though, and let her eyes express just precisely how much she is not pleased that Brooks is with such a dangerous looking alien.
Quen didn't look bothered at all, in fact, Kenny could have sworn that he saw amusement flash across her face before it went back to being blank.
"Besides Dax is Nya," Quen leaned forward to nod at the rather feminine alien beside Dax. She only reached Dax' shoulder, but she was still a head taller than most of the crew. Her marks were tamed, not glowing and were a pale pink. Her skin was probably the palest of the group beside Quen, a light grey.
What was strange was that she seemed to have something comparable to hair. It looked coarser than Exo's hair like it was rough to the touch, and she had it in multiple braids that reached her mid back.
"She's my caretaker," Honey whispered, leaning forward to speak quietly to Kat and Kenny who had arrived the latest, so they hadn't had the chance to find out.
Kenny just hoped that Nya is fitting to her appearance, tame and not dangerous. Honestly, though, Nya probably has to watch out for herself considering she is caring for the one and only Honey.
"Besides Nya is Cho, the caretaker for Benny." Quen folded her hands, not bothering to gesture to the alien that she introduced this time.
Cho was taller than Nya, and her marks were a dull maroon color. Her skin tone was similar to Dax's; only it was more of a dark brown instead of a midnight black.
So far all of the caretakers that had been introduced kept blank faces, only occasionally meeting one of the human's eyes before looking away.
Kenny was trying to absorb everything akin to Honey who was trying to remember every single alien's name. Meanwhile, the others stood on guard on their makeshift circle.
"And the caretaker for your leader is Mon; he is what you may call my advisor." The alien, Mon, stepped forward and bowed at the waist a little before standing back up.
"I will be the one that you come to if you have any questions that your caretakers are not able to answer or simply don't understand your question." Kenny glanced at Gunner, wondering how he feels about it.
Even though Mon has been somewhat hospitable and friendly, Kenny is still not getting a good vibe from him. He wonders if the alien is merely hiding his sinister side since they are in front of the queen.
Gunner has never been an open book about his emotions, but Kenny was able to tell that Gunner is exceptionally wary around his own caretaker. Sure, Kenny is too, but not to that extent.
"Now, on my left is Tec, he is the main pilot of the ship." Annabeth nudged Kenny's side and nodded her head at the masculine that was somewhat smaller than the others. "He's alright, though he is kind of timid."
Kenny nodded, eyeing the smaller alien called Tec. He skin was a pale lavender color, and his markings were an aquatic blue that almost seemed to swim across his skin, rippling like water. Just from the way Tec held himself, Kenny could see that Tec did indeed act a little timid.
"And besides Tec is Zav, our translator." It made sense now that they had paired Zav with Ollie. Zav was almost as tall as Exo and Dax, but much slimmer. He looked almost identical to Cho, so much so that Kenny suspects that they must be related somehow.
"And the last caretaker is Exo, my general and military advisor." Exo did nothing at his big title, just continued to stand there with his arms crossed. Kenny was beginning to even think that he looks bored.
"Each and every one of you will go through a process before learning about our ways and culture. Caretakers, please go through the process as soon as possible." After those words, Quen stepped forward towards the group of huddled humans.
"Kat, come along." Quen just waved her hand, probably expecting Kat to come running at her command, but Kenny knows his friend. He turned to her and wasn't surprised to see Kat, fuming in place and glaring at the Quen with all her might.
Brooks stepped forward, placing a gentle hand on Kat's shoulder. "Please, Kat. I know it's hard, but she is their queen." Brooks spoke ever so softly, so the aliens could not hear her. Kat considered her words for a few moments before she sighed loudly.
"Sure, but you owe me. Like, I am expecting you make something good for me to eat eventually to make up." Kat grinned at Brooks, who smiled back at her.
"Kat!" Quen finally seemed to realize that Kat was not following her like a puppy, and her vivid red eyes were practically just piercing Kat and Brooks with mental daggers.
"I'm coming," Kat said miserably, dragging her feet behind her. Kenny snorted beside Brooks and shook his head at her. "I almost feel bad for her," he joked, nudging Brooks' shoulder with his own.
"Kenny," Exo didn't even have to raise his voice for Kenny to hear it. He wasn't as dramatic as Kat when he went to his caretaker after exchanging hugs with some of the other crew members, including a very tight one from Gunner.
"Where are we going?" Kenny walked alongside Exo, letting the alien lead the way since he clearly knew his way around the massive vessel. "Back to my room, we need to go through the process as soon as possible."
