Did I ever even learn to read?

I learn better when I do things myself than when I have to read a book for it. That's because I have two modes when I'm supposed to read: Either I can't put it down, or I can't retain any information. The latter goes for anything that I have to read but doesn't interest me (i.e. college textbooks).
That doesn't make me dumb. I just learn in a different way compared to most others. Is it any surprise then that I struggle on my standardized tests?
