Translucent pallor, rouged cheeks and painted lips- the look that tells everyone you can afford to wear a face that melts at the slightest exertion, and cracks over any attempt at a genuine smile. Even if it does fail to hide your smallpox scars.
I like that it starts with the protagonist putting on a "mask", it feels symbolic for his role in the story and his personality. I wonder how this will reflect in the story later on.
The world is falling apart. Crops shrivel and the air grows thinner as a famine-stricken underground colony teeters on the brink of total war. Everyone is doing their best to pretend it's business as usual, except for four people, brought together by the crushing realization that they may be the only ones in a position to turn it around. And the very order they wish to protect is going to do everything within its power to stop them.
