I feel like she's barking up the wrong tree design-wise. Her client prefers that goth-girl look. Don't try too hard for that fancy dress stuff. Cater to her goth side and blend it with the formal attire look required and you'll please everyone that matters! :D (easier said than done I know, but it somehow feels right up your alley so you should do a much better job at this kind of thing than Gold would)
