Charlie was immediately given work, and while others might have hated being treated like that, Charlie felt that was the way to show his abilities.
He lifted a box with things he didn't understand. Mostly complex wires and rubbers. Charlie might have been good with weapons and bombs, but only chemical and instant, not complicated with those big screens with numbers that were seen on TV.
A girl with burning red hair took the box, and Charlie couldn't release it.
-Thanks for your help.- The girl spoke out of manners, but not really meaning it. She pulled and spinne trying to move the box, but Charlie kept holding it.
-Oh yes. Sorry. Need help with anything else?- He couldn't help but notice the girl's tall nose. Her face was rather long, and her eyebrows thick, her nose had a large relief, and her cheeks had dark brown freckles, but that brought a dumb smile to his face.
-Do you know how to manage a speaker motherboard? We can use you for the fireworks if not, you're the bomb boy, right?
Charlie didn't want his name reduced to such a thing, but it was fun coming from the girl's mouth.
-Charlie, actually. But yes, I can manage with fireworks. A-and your name?- He put a hand over his hip before realizing it looked stupid and letting it fall to his sides.
-Mariluz, but everyone calls me Mary, and I expect you to follow suit.
Charlie didn't complain. He followed Mary behind a tall black cloth wall that faced the cluster of tents he had innitially come from. Even from such a weird angle, he knew what that was, and the kids working with sound effects and lights didn't make it any more difficult.
-What's the show for? What kind of special event can happen here? Someone learning to use their powers? Because I would complain if this was for me and my friends.
-Hey Sun,- Mary answered sarcasticaly, leaving the box next to a little girl, not older than 12, who seemed to be working on a pair of large speakers.- Not every party is for you, if that was what you were expecting. We do these parties every a few days, not only to lighten the mood, but also to celebrate another day of survival. It has become rather repetitive now, since we've always been safe, but the people light the place up metaforicaly.- Mary tursed and stared at a candle that had gone out without Charlie realizing. After just a few seconds, it turned on again. You light it up literaly. Charlie thought.- Better safe and neutral than in danger but falsely entertained.
Charlie liked how this girl spoke.
-So how will the fireworks work? You can aparently make fire-
-Heat, fuel and oxygen. Not hard.
-Right. But how are we going to get them up there?- Charlie pointed at the sky.- I can't just throw it with my hand. If I make them here and throw it, it won't reach enough height as to not blow up our ears. But I can't just make them appear up in the sky.
-Then how about we make them fly with balloons and I turn them on already on the sky?- Mary suggested like it was an easy question. Charlie decided he was not wrong when he thought he was attracted to inteligent people. -The balloon would already have fire, so heat. There's definetely oxygen up there, and I can use the own balloon as fuel.- She stare up at the few stars appearing. Had it really been only a day? The sunset still shone like every other day before Charlie had been taken away.
-Good idea, Mary, so what will this show have?
Mary winked and sticked her tongue out for an instant before speaking with a grin.
-You'll see it from up the stage. Or down at the dancefloor. Either way, it's a surprise for the new ones.
And Charlie laughed to himself in that highpitched laugh that escaped his mouth each time he felt euphoric. This was a small family he would have been happy to be welcomed into.
The girl had walked up to them and moved her hands in odd ways. It took Charlie a moment to realize it was sign language, but since he didn't know how to decipher it, he just stared at the girl's eyes and how brightly they shone.
-Alright. We'll start once the sun fully sets, let's get those lights up and speakers singing.- Mary smiled widely, determined, and climbed up a metal structure. Charlie wondered how it could have gotten there, but then he realized how hard the girl from previously was concentrating a little further to the right from the couple. The metal structure seemed to be expanding to surround the black cloth, and a few other kids climbed arround different places of it carrying various objects. Cables, lights, speakers, and a single boy carries three full medium balloons with his back. He gave them to Mary with few words of politeness before heading with the light people.
-Ready?
-As I'll ever be.
