The smile on Morgana's face did not leave her as they entered the town. Many store owners nodded at her as Ewan lead both her and Helena through the winding streets and passed the various stalls. They paused only occasionally to look at the merchandise that was being sold as well as purchasing a few small items, like jewellery or cloth. Morgana even purchased a small, rounded glass containing a fine smelling perfume or Lavender and Jasmine, two smells that she loved more than anything.
Helena marvelled at the idea of being able to buy whatever she wanted as Morgana had kindly offered to pay for it. Although she was sceptical about buying too much in case it was seen as abusing the offer, Helena still purchased several roles of dark green velvet. She had plans to turn this material into a beautiful dress for the Princess seeing as the green would likely bring out the colour of her eyes. As well as the fabric, Helena also took the liberty of buying two small spindles of gold and silver thread, so she could decorate the dress with some intricate patterns. Morgana had done so much for her the past few days that Helena felt it right to return the favour, even if the Princess was unlikely to accept the dress.
Once all their chosen items had been purchased, Ewan lead the ladies away from the marketplace and in the direction of the wall, a place Helena had only seen from a distance. As they approached, Morgana caught sight of two boys, both looked like they were extremely busy and neither of them looked up as the Princess approached. Without even seeing their faces, Morgana knew it was most likely Caleb and Arthur, though she had little idea as to what they were up to.
Morgana furrowed her eyebrows in confusion and looked to Ewan, a small smile tugging on the corner of his lips. She could only assume that he had asked her father for the day trip so she could spend some more time with people her own age in an environment that was normal for someone of her age.
As they approached the lower portion of the Upper Town, Morgana noticed that more people were looking at her with confused expressions rather than nods like many others had. Whenever the past someone who looked the slightest bit confused, she would offer them a smile and a nod, hoping they would return the favour, many did but others just watched her pass them, the confused expression not lifting. It made sense for them to be confused, it was rare for them to see the young Princess in the town with just one guard, the majority of the time she had a least six by her side, an annoyance if ever there was one.
"Hello, gentleman," Ewan said, stopping in front of the two young lads who were both focused far more on their makeshift bows than on the arrival of Morgana. Caleb, who had just finished securing a piece of string to the end of a bent stick, looked up at Ewan. Immediately startled, he dropped his newly made bow onto the ground and stood up, his back as straight as a piece of board.
"Yes, S-sir?" Caleb said, trying to swallow the stutter before it made him sound like a fool. He nudged Arthur with his foot and gestured his head towards the Knight and the two ladies. Arthur soon got the message and followed suit, though he stumbled slightly as he stood up.
"I am taking these two ladies beyond the wall for a picnic and as I know you got on rather well with the Princess yesterday, it would be my pleasure to allow you to come with us," Ewan said, the formality in his voice sounding stronger than ever.
Morgana raised an eyebrow to the young Knight who simply smiled at her, his hand resting on his sword as it always did. She knew that this had been his plan all along. To allow her to spend more time with the two boys she had befriended less than a day prior. No one knew Morgana better than Ewan did and she was glad for this as she would not have the opportunity to have some fun with people her own age were it not for the Knight who was putting his own knighthood on the line.
"I would need to ask my mama," Caleb said, his voice shaking and his words faulting as he spoke to Ewan.
"I shall speak to her for you, I am assuming you two are related, are you not?"
"Yes, Arthur here is my cousin, he lives with us."
"Great, I shall be back shortly."
Ewan turned and headed to the nearest house, Morgana did not know how he knew it to be the house in which the young men lived, though she had her suspicions. Ewan had been posted to the wall for rather a long time and it would hardly be surprising that he knew where everyone lived. After so many years, knowing where the people lived would be of great importance were any of them to come to any harm.
The four children stood staring at each other in a silence that was neither awkward nor comfortable, it was just a silence. Morgana chewed on the inside of her cheek until she felt Helena elbow her slightly as a warning. As she could not longer chew her own mouth to keep herself entertained, Morgana focused on Ewan who was discussing something with the woman who had told Caleb of the day before. She knew that it was his mother given the way Caleb had addressed her. This was the first time she had seen the woman fully and Morgana was amazed at how alike she and Caleb really were.
Caleb's mother had dirty blonde hair that she kept away from her eyes with a strip of dirty orange cloth. Her eyes were the colour of hazelnuts, dark and welcoming, her skin tone was fairer than Caleb's and made her eyes more noticeable. She wore a light brown tunic that reached to her knees as well as a pair of sandals that wound up her legs like a snake. A dark brown shawl rest atop her shoulders and covered her arms, keeping them warm despite the air being warm as well. The woman reminded Morgana of her own mother, though those memories had long since faded.
"Your mother is far too generous, she has gifted us a large pork pie to share. She is a lady of great politeness," Ewan said, tucking the wrapped pork pie into a woven basket Morgana had not noticed earlier.
"Indeed, Sir," Caleb said.
"She has given you both permission to accompany us beyond the wall, though she expects you to be home by sundown. A request I am sure I can uphold. Now gentleman, by all means, bring your bows, I am sure we can find something to make some arrows out of."
Caleb and Arthur both bent down and retrieved the two bows that had dropped, neither had been broken on impact, but the string on Caleb's had unwound and even before unknotted, meaning he would have to tie the whole thing all over again. To Morgana, he didn't look too fussed by the thought of having to retie it, if anything he looked glad to be leaving the Upper Town, probably for the first time in his life.
It was rare for someone of the town to go beyond the wall unless they had something important to do in the Lower Town. That was rare and meant that many people had rarely moved from their surroundings. They had not seen the other towns, the other people who existed inside of Veritas. Morgana knew many of them would give their lives to venture out beyond and see what did lay outside of the wall, but it was a dream that rarely ever became reality.
Luckily for them, they had Ewan, who was allowed to go as far as he dared, with or without permission. On this particular adventure, however, it was unlikely of him to take them too far away, there were bandits who lived in the forest and on his own, despite his training, he would have been unable to overpower them.
Ewan led the group through the metal gate and into the fields that separated the towns from one another. Many expected the Lower Town to remain on the other side of the wall, but it did not, it lay passed fields and even a small stream that travelled through the grassy planes. This was where Ewan had led them.
The stream ran straight through the centre of the field that separated the two towns, it was rare for someone to come that far or cross the wooden bridge that lay across the running water. Grass surrounded them as far as Morgana could see, it was a lush, light green and was something she had rarely got to see close up. It was rare for grass to grow inside the wall, though Morgana never did understand why.
"This appears to be a good spot, do you not agree?" Ewan said, placing the basket onto the ground.
"It is beautiful, Ewan, I do not think I have ever had the opportunity to look at this part of the Kingdom close up for so long. Thank you for taking us here," Morgana smiled.
"The pleasure is all my, Morgana. After your escape yesterday, I realised you must never get to see very much of the Kingdom unless you are looking from a window. Here you can act like a normal girl your age without being criticised. The same goes for you Helena, have as much fun as you want, this is your afternoon after all."
"Thank you, Sir Ewan, I do not believe I have ever travelled this far before. The view really is breathtaking," Helena said, kneeling down on the grass and admiring the stream that ran before her.
From his basket, Ewan removed a rectangular blanket, the light purple colouring appeared to glow in the sunlight as it was gently placed on the ground, covering up a large portion of the grass where they had decided to sit. Helena shuffled backwards until her knees were pressing into the blanket rather than the grass, she did not take her eyes off the stream as she did so. Ewan slowly began to unpack the food he had stored away in the basket, Morgana did not understand how had managed to conceal it all, but she did not question him.
"Feel free to join us, gentleman, you do not need to stand so far away," Ewan said to Caleb and Arthur who looked too mesmerised by the mountains of food to dare move. Morgana had to bite her tongue to stop herself from laughing at their facial expressions.
Slowly, they joined them, perching themselves on the edge of the blanket and fiddling with the strings on their bows. Caleb was trying to retie the knot on the stick but was failing to keep it secure, though the bottom knot was holding rather well.
"May I have a go? My knot skills are probably better than yours," Morgana asked, holding her hand out to Caleb. With a shaking hand, he passed her the bow, he looked reluctant to do so, but as soon as he saw the way Morgana tied the knot, his face turned from concern to amazement. Once the knot was as tight as it could be without snapping the stick, Morgana handed the makeshift bow back to Caleb.
"Thank you, My Lady," Caleb said, his voice full of awe and wonder.
"We discussed this yesterday, did we not? Please, call me Morgana," she replied, rearranging her skirts over her knees.
"Of course, I forgot. Thank you, Morgana," Caleb said apprehensively.
Morgana could not help but smile at the dark haired boy. For the first time, in a long time, she no longer felt like Princess Morgana Devereux. She was just plain old Morgana and she hoped, more than anything, that it would last.
