Captain Rage is in its opening week, and having been a huge fan since he was young, Rose insists they catch a show. The theater is a short walk from the city center, and having left their bikes at home, Prince, Jax, Rose, and Felix take the bus downtown.
It must be some strange twist of fate, Prince decides, that they’re walking past the crystal clear windows of the biggest department stores in the country when he spies a familiar item, and stops dead on the sidewalk.
Rose slams into his back and cusses, but Princeton’s eyes are glued to the display. “Dude, your feet melt into the concrete? Don't stop like that,” he drawls, and steps around Prince's shoulder to peer inside the glass. “What are you looking at?”
“The shoes,” Prince whispers.
The cherry red ballet flats topped with a bow are sitting just beyond the barrier, unsuspecting, innocent.
Felix watches quietly, an odd understanding in his eyes. Jax follows their gaze, hums. “This again?” he asks.
"Yeah," Prince says. "They're pretty."
“Those are girl’s shoes,” Rosario points out, an edge of disgust to his voice. “Do you wanna put them on or something?”
“So what if I do?” Prince snaps, irritation scratching his throat. Rose gapes, speechless.
Jax slaps a heavy hand down on Rose’s shoulder. “Prince likes this stuff,” he explains. “When he was four he threw a bitch fit because our dad told him he couldn’t wear our cousin's dress. So, he stole our next door neighbor's and ran down the street wearing her heels. I thought it was weird at first, but,” he shrugs. “That’s just what Prince likes.”
"But aren't you afraid you'll get beat up or something?" Rose asks. "Dresses, skirts, that kind of stuff is for girls!"
Jax barks a laugh, and it startles them all. "Rose, people used to put their baby boys in pretty little dresses for photographs. If Prince wants to wear a pair of red stilettos, that's up to him. Anyway I don't see anything wrong with it."
Rosario looks to Felix for backup, but as he does, Felix shrugs and says, "Me neither. The shoes are nice, who cares who wears them?"
Prince's eyes are glued to the price tag tied delicately around the loop at the heel of the cherry flats. It has two zeros on the end.
In Doctor Horadi’s office, Clover stops mid-sentence, brings her hands up to her mouth. “Oh,” she whispers.
“Oh,” Princeton repeats.
"What is it?" Doctor Horadi asks, but Jax is asking Prince something, too, and Clover manages to reply, "The shoes are expensive."
A moment passes with Prince at a loss. When Clover gets home, he vows, he’ll make a much nicer dinner than spaghetti. He’ll hug Martha and thank her properly. He'll take excellent care of the shoes, clean then regularly, make them last forever.
All he can think on the rest of the walk to Captain Rage is that he can’t wait to show the shoes to Lisette.
