Fun fact: In an earlier draft of the story, the pond monster was going to already have eyes floating around in it when it was introduced as just a weird body of water. I decided I wanted it to be less obviously evil.
Also, by having it look more plain in its first appearance, that made any changes to it that came later be more pronounced.
