Sams head exploded. He had met MinJoon before? He tried to remember the first day of first grade. He remembered not sleeping the night before and making himself sick with worry. He remembered his mom having to drag him to the car and strap him. And he remembered arriving at the school, being dragged by his mom, screaming the whole way. He remembered seeing another little boy crying. He’d gone to the boy and taken his hand, and the boy had looked up at him with a red tear stained face. He didn’t remember what the boy looked like, accept that he was Asian.
“MinJoon.” Gasped Sam. He suddenly remembered what he’d said that day.
“I’m scared too. But we’ll be okay. That’s what you said.” Murmured MinJoon.
“I never forgot it Sam. Ever since that day, you were my hero.”
Sam breathed deeply in and out, trying to process the information. MinJoon continued, rambling on.
“I was obsessed with you Sam. The day my dad pulled me out of public school I cried myself to sleep because I thought I’d never see you again. But I did.”
“Wh-What!?” Stammered Sam, head reeling, “when?”
“When we were older, I think maybe 12...at Disneyland.”
“I love Disneyland!” Exclaimed Sam. MinJoon smiled and nodded.
“I know you do. I saw you there, in line for space mountain. At first I didn’t recognize you, but I got closer, and I was sure it was you. You were wearing short denim shorts and pink tee shirt that had a phone number on it. I wanted to run over to you but I was to shy, and I knew you wouldn’t remember me.
“I was so impressed with you. I was infatuated. I mean, you went on space mountain! I’m terrified of roller coasters.” Sighed MinJoon. Sam opened and closed his mouth but couldn’t make a sound. MinJoon was impressed with him? How did he know what Sam was wearing seven years ago? It has been a short with his moms phone number so he didn’t get lost. They were both at Disneyland at the same time? That’s impossible.
“MinJoon...I ...I-” Sam struggled to find words. MinJoon put his arm on Sams shoulder.
“I’m sorry to flood you with surprises like this. I know you hate new things. Take as much time as you need.”
Sam sat silently, scrunching the blanket in his fists and breathing slowly.
“What else haven’t you told me?” Sam asked anxiously. MinJoon hung his head.
“I didn’t tell you about my dad,” sighed MinJoon weakly, “my dad...you probably know him. Bumsoo Kim. The actor.”
Sam Gasped. He had heard of an actor named Bumsoo Kim. He played the main character in a popular Korean drama when he was child, and then became a millionaire, and then went insane and moved to LA.
“Bumsoo Kim is your father?!” Exclaimed Sam in disbelief. MinJoon nodded sullenly, looking sick.
“Yes. And he’s coming over for dinner tomorrow night.”
Sam looked at MinJoon with wide eyes. MinJoon bit his bottom lip and tears glittered in his eyes.
“Sam I’m so sorry for not telling you,” MinJoon choked, “I was...scared. I was so scared you wouldn’t want me if you knew.”
Sam gazed out the window at the city lights, watching an airplane blink across the sky.
“M-minJoon?”
“Yes?”
“Actually...I wasn’t sure at first...but...now you’ve told me everything I’m sure. MinJoon? I...want you.” Same voice dropped to a whisper. MinJoon lifted his head quickly to look at Sam.
“What?”
Sam blushed and looked at his hands.
“I said...I do want you. You...make me feel special. I love feeling...cared about.” Sam mumbled shyly, face bright red.
MinJoon couldn’t contain himself anymore and pulled Sam into a tight hug.
“Oh Sammy...what would I do without you?” MinJoon snuffled. Sams face burned but he hugged MinJoon back, the faint scent of vanilla and detergent filling his nose as he rested his head against MinJoon’s shoulder.
“Is there anything else you have to tell me?” Asked Sam when MinJoon released him.
“Just that I think you are amazing and adorable.” MinJoon winked. Sam blushed harder.
“Well Sammy, I’m so sorry for bothering you at this time of night...I should leave you to get good sleep.”
“Ok. Goodnight MinJoon.”
“Goodnight to you Sam. But I’m afraid not for me...”
“What? Why?” Sam masked curiously as MinJoon stood up.
“Well I guess this is another thing I didn’t tell you, but I have some sleeping issues.” MinJoon sighed, waving it aside and heading to the door.
“Wait, MinJoon,” Sam called, “don’t go.”
MinJoon walked obediently back to Sam.
“You can’t sleep?” Sam asked MinJoon with a caring tone. MinJoon sighed and shrugged.
“Not well. It’s been that way for a while.” MinJoon noticed Sams face was full of worry.
“It’s fine, really. Not a big deal.” MinJoon assured his beloved Sam. But Sam was smarter than that.
“Is there anything that helps you sleep? Like music or something?”
“No, nothing helps.” MinJoon lied. There was one thing that helped, and that was snuggling with another person. And that was the last reason MinJoon hadn’t told Sam why he needed a roommate.
“Well MinJoon...”
“Yeah?”
“Well I was just asking because when I was little and had a nightmare I could always sleep better when someone else was there. I would go lie on my moms bedroom floor.” Sam explained to MinJoon, who looked away.
“Well yeah I guess I can sleep better when someone else is there...but I live alone.” MinJoon sighed.
“I’m here.” Sams voice was quiet but strong. MinJoon looked at Sam with a warm, loving expression.
“Would you mind if I slept on your floor?” MinJoon asked pathetically.
Sam looked a bit shaken, even though he had been hinting the idea to MinJoon.
“O-of course n-not...” he stuttered, “but I can be the one I sleep on the floor.”
MinJoon Gasped in horror.
“Over my dead body does my Sammy sleep on the floor!”
Sam shrugged, knowing at this point he wouldn’t win. MinJoon would never let him sleep anywhere other than a cushy king sized bed with silk sheets.
