"What are you doing?" Katsuo asked when he entered his shared room with Ciara. She was hunching over the table, moving her fingers on the surface in rapid motion.
"What?" she startled, looking up. She seemed surprised to see him.
"What has you so focused?"
"Oh, you see, I found this in Blackteeth's castle," she replied and held up a rectangular item. It had colorful drawings and Latin letters on it.
"What is it?"
"It's called a cellphone, and-" Ciara's eyes glinted in excitement, "it is connected to the internet! Isn't that awesome?!"
"I hear you talking, but I can't understand you," Katsuo said as he settled down next to her and quickly put his arms around Ciara. "What's a cellphone? What's an internet?"
"Uh, how do I explain?" she mused as her thumb moved along the rectangle. Katsuo closed his eyes for a moment, smelling her sweet vanillin scent and couldn't help but nuzzle Ciara's neck. Who cares about a strange device, when he has her right beside him?
"Hey! It tickles!" She protested among little bursts of laughter. "Stop it!"
"Don't want to."
"Is this because I took too long to answer?"
"You didn't answer," he corrected her. Then he squeezed her body, feeling content.
"Well then, listen to me!" Ciara said, hitting his arms in vain. In the end, she gave up with a sigh, looking up at the ceiling as if she could find a solution there. "So this thing is a communication device. And the internet is... a large database, a web, so to say, that connect people from all around the world. With this, I can talk to anyone, at any time and I get an immediate response. Awesome, isn't it?"
"Uh-huh," Katsuo replied, still nuzzling her neck.
Ciara squirmed as she continued.
"And you can find all sorts of information there. For example, books."
Now that got his attention.
"Information? Books?"
"Yes."
"Is there something about my enemies?"
"Maybe?" Ciara sounded unsure. She could probably find that info, but should she share it with him? After all, wouldn't that be manipulating the past? What if she tears apart the time-space continuum? She decided to distract him. "But books! You can read novels on the internet. Like this site, Tapas, you can read tons of novels and comics."
"Like Chōjū-giga?"
Ciara had no idea what he was talking about, but as long as he doesn't want her to spoil future events, she was going to humor him.
"Sure." She nodded and scrolled down. "And there's an event going on! You can give ink to creators!"
"Did they run out of ink? I'll send them a ship full of ink if it pleases you."
"No, not that kind of ink!" Ciara was struggling to explain and chuckled at her situation. "You give them ink to support them. Electronic ink."
"Erekutorinikku?"
"Eeer- You buy ink with money and send it to creators. That's how you help them," Ciara explained. "Or, you can get it for free for watching videos or inviting friends. They sometimes have special sales. Too bad watching videos doesn't work in medieval Japan and my credit card is disabled."
"I have no idea what that means, but you don't have to worry about money. I have plenty you can use."
"You're very generous, Katsuo," Ciara said, smiling and kissed his cheek. "But that won't help me. I hope other readers will support my favorite novelist, though!"
"Oh? Is a kiss on the cheek all I get?" He pouted, completely ignoring what she said.
A mischievous smile played on Ciara's lips as she put down the cellphone and turned around to face Katsuo. She held his hands and looked him in the eyes.
"Why? What else can I give you?"
"I thought you'd never ask."
Katsuo leaned in and planted a kiss on her mouth. It was short and sweet and for some reason, Ciara felt a little bit disappointed. It was her turn to pout. When Katsuo saw her expression, he grinned.
"Make me your famous ravioli."
"It's getting late..." Ciara trailed off, looking to the side.
Katsuo leaned closer and whispered seductively in her ear: "I have cheese."
"Why didn't you start with that?!" She asked, jumping up and dragging him out of the room. She couldn't wait to finally taste some cheese, after going without it for so long. "Dinner will be delicious!"
Katsuo smiled, following her in silence. The cellphone was left behind, resting on the table, forgotten. It pinged and vibrated, a message popping up on the screen:
