"Let me continue, it's like this. Your "youness" is still you but it was lacking in strength or size, so I gave your "youness" a little bit of me and bits from your family. I also gave you a purpose which I inscribed on your back. I made you to be more than you were. I gave you a greater capacity to love, not for your sake but for your family's sake especially that of your daughters. Alongside that, I gave your wife a greater capacity for loyalty for yours and your daughters’ sake. You see, Peter, you are still Peter the same as before but if you feel different it is only because it is by the breath of your family that your heart beats now. And that your ultimate purpose was never to live for yourself, but it was to love your daughters. You were brought back to life not to be a tavern keeper, but to be a father."
By now Peter had realization in his eyes. "A life to love." He murmured.
"Aye, now tell me Peter. How have you been doing with your second chance. Have you been living a life full of love?"
That was the nail in the coffin for Peter as he broke down there at the bar. "No!" he bellowed. "Please forgive me, Master Calloway. I have tarnished your gift!"
"Easy! Take it easy Pete! It ain't me you need to make things right with. There is a saying where I come from and that is: the most important thing a father can do to raise his daughters is to love their mother."
"But how, tell me Master Calloway. How do I make this right?" Peter pleaded when he finally caught his breath.
"It's master now is it? Just Cal, you're going to blow my cover. Anyway, I'm no marriage counselor, I also don't know what transpired over the last two hundred years. I do know that sitting around here crying ain't going to change anything."
"Should I go to her?"
"I can't in good confidence say that you should since I ain't heard her half of the story."
"Will you!"
"Will I what?"
"Will you talk to her!"
"Ease up compadre, did you forget that I'm new here? And besides ain't no women going to open up about her personal life to a shady looking character such as myself."
"Okay, no you're right I just got excited is all."
"Ya for right now how about you set me up with a drink and a little information. We can sit and chat, and you can digest some of this revelation."
"Maybe you're right?"
"Maybe? Now that's blasphemy!" Calloway laughed.
Peter settled down after a drink and they chatted about local events. Calloway learned that the Princess would be celebrating his birthday in a couple days with a festival. It always surprised him to hear how loyal the Princess was and it made him feel guilty for proposing right before he thought he'd be leaving for good. He also learned of the great love his creations had for him. Apparently, they were all aware of the back-breaking hours that he had spent on them and their homes.
The elementals even more so, since their hierarchy works outside of nobility their highest loyalty was to the natural order and the world itself, then to the respective Sylvan knights who had stewardship over them, then to each other, then to the cities well-being, then to the individuals they lived with and considered friends. They're love for Calloway was almost on par with the world while at the same time they held him infinitely higher than the sylvan knights in terms of love and respect.
"That's a lot of pressure you know?"
"Don't even get me started on the rest of the beings you left here. The Dyads, Slimes, and Nymphs all lust after you. The Druids all see you as some kind of prophet king, and the spirit warriors all whisper about your valor on the battle field. Even the newcomers who have never met you speak about you in reverent tones."
"Jeez, maybe I should just leave before I shatter everyone's illusions of me. Are there any quests from the Guild that will send me far away?"
"The guild?"
"Yes, the adventurers Guild, you know the High Elves of the North Wind."
"I guess we haven't gotten to that part yet."
"Why, what happened to the guild?"
"There is no guild, actually I guess what I actually mean are there are no more guilds. With the migration of the great ones there were no more adventurers and all the guilds disappeared overnight. A few have sprung up here and there in the human kingdoms, but none have made their way out here. Currently the closest thing is a few smaller ones that have joined into a type of alliance in the eastern beastkin kingdom, mercenary guild of vagabonds in the southern human kingdoms, and an assassin guild among the dark elves."
"Hmm. Maybe being a guild master is something I should look into?"
"It's worth considering, but one of the reasons they have failed so many times is because being an adventurer is synonymous with a volunteer death sentence. Besides with capable guards and the City's defenses we’ve never needed adventurers to clear away any monsters or fix any problems. We're very self-sufficient with the city you left for us."
"Complacence and laziness, huh. You know, your youngest as well as few from her generation were practically made to be successful adventurers."
"What do you mean?"
"Well, I gave the adults backstories and dreams, all to give them purpose. But the children I gave potential, I gave them capacities for greatness so that when they grew up they'd be shining stars. Your youngest I gave the spirit of adventure, without an adventurer guild as an outlet I can see how she'd be a troublemaker. Your oldest I gifted with incredible talents in alchemy for making great health potions and tonics, but without her sister needing them or other adventurers to buy them I can see her love of plants only extending to cultivation and cooking."
"So what you are saying, is that without a guild our children will never live up to their full potential."
"I guess." Calloway placed his hands behind his head and leaned back to stare at the ceiling. "But I never anticipated that one wouldn't be needed, doing my job too well never factored into my crafting the city. Well poop." Calloway finished his drink and slid the mug to Peter. "I'm going to take a walk. Don't do anything too rash while I'm gone."
"As you wish your highness." This time calling Calloway 'your highness was more of a jab rather than a term of endearment.
Calloway walked out the door. He decided to cast a stealth ability that obscured him, he also cast a couple abilities that would help him get around town.
