You had me at hello...

Reminisce

Apr 26, 2020

I was waiting beside the Nissan Maxima, leaning on the passenger door. I was wearing a fairly large jacket with a casual cyan blue dress. I was at the beach of my first recovered memory. Woodbine beach in the city of Toronto. This is where Maison and I were confessing our deep love to each other. The moon was placed nicely in the sky, shining a glimpse of it's light on the lake. The breeze was perfectly dancing through the trees and grass. I checked the time on my phone. It was already past midnight. I wasn't sure why I was here but then I saw a silhouette appearing from the beach, slowly walking towards me. As the shadow walks closer, I see Maison peer from the darkness and smile.

"Valerie, Sorry. It took so long! I had to put out the fire, Were you afraid while I was gone?"

My body automatically moved on it's own, as if I was only seeing through my eyes. I shook my head and I threw my arms around his neck. I pressed my lips onto his and quickly turned around.

"Tonight... Can I stay with you? We can find another place to stay at for a day!"

He placed his arms around my shoulders, and he whispered in my ears.

"You're so cute, I'm always so flustered around you. I can't keep my composure with you. I will do as you say, My Princess."

He kissed my cheek and I felt his cheeks flushed as he said these words. He unlocked the doors and grabbed the handle, opening the door and raising his hand facing the opening.

"After you m'lady."

I giggled and moved on to the passenger seat, he closed the door and walked around. He sat down and started the car. As he starts to drive around the Lakeshore's area of Toronto, water droplets hit the front windows of the car. Toronto's Downtown had very metropolitan infrastructure. The stores are very high and modern. They consist of big brands and big businesses, most of the buildings would cower over each other. It looked like the world was in a glass maze. After a few minutes, the rain starts to pour harder. He slowed down the speed but we didn't pay too much mind on the weather. I looked towards him and smiled to myself. As I watched the water droplets slide on the window, I started to speak.

"Maison, could you recite that poem from the first time I met you?" I heard him chuckle under his breath.

"Sure." He took a deep breath and then started to speak.

That I did always love,

I bring thee proof:

That till I loved

I did not love enough.

That I shall love alway,

I offer thee

That love is life,

And life hath immortality.

This, dost thou doubt, sweet?

Then have I

Nothing to show

But Calvary.

- Emily Dickinson

We reminisce the first time we both met. We both looked at each other's eyes and smiled in awe. Maison would always choose to take the longer routes home, just so he could be in my presence longer. He took the route from the Gardiner Expressway to the QEW highway then would drive on the country roads next. While Maison was driving on the Gardiner Expressway, I noticed the lack of cars on the road today. Maybe... It was due to the weather forecast of the storm... There was still a van further away from us, keeping it's distance from the Nissan due to the rain. From the corner of my eye, I see a bright shining light and a crescendo of repetitive honking coming from behind the car. The noise gradually got louder. The car was gaining speed and was out of control. It was sliding towards us from behind. Maison hit the gas and increased his speed from 110 kmph to 130 kmph. I screamed and I quickly grabbed on to the wheel. He quickly reacted by turning the wheel to the left, my hands were still gripping on the wheel. I froze and I could feel the Nissan positioning itself horizontally, facing the light while sliding on the road through the pouring rain. I realized now that the car's high beams were on. The light grew stronger and started to burn my eyes. The car was facing the Nissan now. The light was blinding and all I could see was white. Suddenly, the Nissan hit the van in front of us. The Van didn't see us in their blind spot and it eventually spun to the edge of the expressway and abruptly stopped there. The vehicle behind us hit the driver's side of the Nissan and rotated counter-clockwise towards the left side of the expressway.

I open my eyelids with tears running down my cheeks. I get up and raise my arms, placing them on each other, feeling the goosebumps haunting my body. Cold sweat is running down my spine. I take a deep breath and face towards my alarm clock. I checked to see the time, it was 3:04 am. I was still quite tired, but the nightmare was still on my mind. I got off the bed and walked downstairs to the kitchen. I went into the fridge and picked up the milk container. I transition my body towards the cupboards to grab the cookies. A few minutes later, I finished and made myself calm. I enjoyed the cookies and realized I am able to go back to sleep.I tidied my area and headed towards my room.

The next morning, I realized I slept in till noon. I raise my arms for a nice stretch, then I hear a knock on my bedroom door. The door was already wide open and I face to see Averie leaning on the edge of the door and smiling.

"Breakfast?" She held up her car keys on her left hand, shaking them while having her right side still leaning on the door. I nodded and then got myself out of bed.

We went to a place called "Symposium Cafe, Restaurant & Lounge". I never heard of this place in my life but my sister said it was amazing. On the car ride home, I was extremely satisfied with the breakfast there. I got the good ole, pancakes, bacon and deep - fried potatoes. The traditional breakfast of a Canadian. That's all I could talk about while Averie was grinning and laughing. I was looking at the cars ahead of me, watching them pass by. My focus was held on the lights of the vehicles and the roar of the engines. I started to remember the nightmare I had last night. Averie noticed my fearful expression and tried to change the atmosphere.

"What's wrong?" She asked in a very concerned tone. I sigh.

"Was I with Maison before the accident or during the accident, by any chance?" She didn't answer, she stayed silent the whole car ride home. She looks at me and laughs

"Silly Val! Maison is here with you now, what are you talking about?"

She is right! it can't be possible... she smiles nervously. I smiled back and got out of the car. She seems cautious when walking towards the house. Something is not right here... Once we got home, the whole day she kept her distant from me.
