The next morning the brothers have breakfast together before going off to do their own thing, Blake promising not to hide in the cabin all day. Instead, he finds a relatively quiet corner of the ship and sits down with his notepad. It’s perfect for writing; private enough to not worry about being disturbed while still giving him a good view to stimulate his imagination. He spends a good hour or two alternating between writing and people watching before anyone else comes to his sitting area.
Surprisingly, it's Dewi. "What are you doing here?" Dewi grins. Blake finally talked. It's an enchanting voice and now he wants to hear it more.
He gestures towards the pool area. "Kate wanted to sunbathe and doesn't want me joining her. What about you?"
"Writing. It's quiet here." Dewi is just about to sit down too but stops.
"Oh, do you want me to leave? I don't want to disturb you…."
"It's okay, you're not a bother. I should take a break anyways." Gaining permission, Dewi sits down.
"So, what are you writing?" He spends the next half hour attentively listening to Blake talk about his story. Both barely notice the passage of time. Eventually, Dewi gets a call from Kate asking where he is. Seems she’s done sunbathing and is ready to spend some time with him… Maybe grab lunch at one of the fancier restaurants on the ship? Dewi excuses himself to be with his girlfriend and Blake goes back to his writing.
Still, they keep running into each other throughout the day. Blake decides to go to the buffet for lunch? Dewi is just coming out of the sushi place next to it. Go swimming at the less populated pool? He has the same idea. Reading a new book near a poolside drink stand? Kate asks Dewi to pick them up lemonades. It’s not like Blake is complaining about all the run-ins, far from it, but it’s kind of odd how frequently it keeps happening.
The next day follows the same pattern of chance encounters, though Blake suspects that meeting after breakfast in the same place as yesterday is intentional. The other times… not so much. Many times he’s with Kate. He seems slightly different when around her, almost stifled. He looks happy, like she’s the light of his life, but… Blake can’t tell what it is, but something makes him feel like Dewi’s not being himself when around her.
They’ve known each other for less than three days, so Blake doesn’t know why he gets that impression. Something just tugs at the back of his mind that Dewi’s behavior is off somehow. Maybe it’s all just wishful thinking? He’s never been in a relationship, so maybe he’s jealous of them and some part of him wants to think something’s wrong between them. At least, that’s what he tries to tell himself until he meets up with Luce that night.
They’re talking about their days when Luce brings up the couple. “Hey, you remember that couple we met our first night? You know, Kate and Dewi… You wouldn’t happen to know if they broke up, would you?”
“No, I’ve run into them a few times and they seem to be happily still together. Why?”
“Oh… I saw Kate flirting with a bunch of guys by the pool this morning. I guess they might have a really open relationship or something. I just thought… nevermind.” Blake feels a prick of anger. Kate had been leaving her boyfriend alone so she could go flirt with other guys.
Is having Dewi not enough for her? Dew will obviously do anything to make her happy. If… if Blake had someone even half as wonderful as him, he’d make sure he knows how amazing he is and would never let him go. If Dewi was his boyfriend, he’d shower Dewi in affection. But he isn’t. He isn’t Dewi’s anything.
