I'm right here

I'm right here

May 06, 2020

I run to the scene, expecting to be told to go somewhere else, but nobody takes mind to me. There was a body, but it was covered, so I couldn't see it. The shape didn't look like my mother, so that was relieving, but then where was my mother? I race up to the open doors, running into the lobby. The lady at the counter wasn't there, and so I go past the front desk, running up the stairs until I got to my level. I don't stop until I get to my room, reaching for the handle. My breath catches as my hand goes through it, causing me to stumble.

"Nononono..." I mutter, desperately trying to grab the metal.

I freeze as I hear footsteps behind me, and I quickly flip around, seeing a police officer come near.

"W-Wait! Help me please..." I say softly.

My hope soars as he looks directly at me, but it's crushed as he reaches through me and knocks on the door.

"I'm right here!!" I yell desperately, my voice cracking with fear.

Never have I been happier to see my mother open the door. She looked sick, exhausted, and sad. She held herself as she talked to the officer, and I was stunned. I wanted to be gone so bad, but I never wanted to see what would happen after.

"I'm here!!" I shout again, stomping my foot on the carpet.

My foot made a sound as it collided with the ground, but neither looked up. I back up, shaking.

     "I never left!! Stop crying!!"

I fling my hands into the air, and one collides with the flower display across from my apartment. It falls to the ground with a thump, the water soaking into the carpet. Both my mother and the officer jump and turn to look at it. I'm staring at it in shock, as are they.

     "What was...?" my mother starts.

"It was most likely unbalanced ma'am," the officer replies, eyeing it, "we'll get it cleaned up, but first, we have news to report."

I reach for the flowers, but my hand passes through the vase.

"What the fuck...?" I mutter softly, before standing up and walking back over to the two.

"Your son, most likely, killed himself ma'am," he said bluntly.

My mother gave a quiet gasp, as if it was news to her, or at least like it was finally setting in.

"He seemed to be under the influence of alcohol, as we found a empty bottle of vodka on the side of the building he allegedly jumped, as well as a knife, as a possible back-up plan, and his phone." he continued, pulling out my phone, not in a bag since even I knew it wouldn't be a reliable source.

My mother breathes out softly, tears lining her eyes, and I take out my phone in confusion, it looks the same as the one he's holding, but the screen keeps glitching on and off.

"After doing a quick search of the house, we found many empty, expired pill bottles in his closet, which may indicate that this wasn't his first attempt. We also found his suicide note, which, of course, we let you read a bit earlier."

My mother manages to speak, her voice cracking, "did you find anything else?"

He nodded, "after opening his phone, we saw he sent a text to his father, saying, 'See you soon.', which we've already covered, his father passed when he was younger. I'm very sorry Mrs. Thomas, but your son is gone, there's no way to get him back."

My mother swayed, grabbing the doorway to steady herself as tears slid down her cheeks.

"I'm sorry sir, this is just so out of the blue, I..."

"No it's not!!" I yell, covering my ears as the officer goes slightly more into detail about my death, and my mother nods as she listens.

I run inside the apartment, my heart heavy, and look around. I take a bit of comfort in the fact that nothings changed, so I keep going. The kitchen is small as always, covered in a tacky black and white checkered flooring, though the white had turned to more of a light yellow. The blinds are still flimsy, and the carpet rough and a dirty grey. It's a generic apartment, nothing special, but I grew up here. There's a small brown couch that's rarely used, though it's still broken. The hallway is badly lit, and a little creepy. I walk down, and instead of taking a left for my room, or going forward a bit more for my moms room, I take a right for the bathroom. I don't have much interest in the room, as it was where I almost died more than once, but it's the only room with a mirror. Not that I really want to see myself, but it wouldn't be a bad idea. I peek in, and I almost don't recognize the person I see. I'm practically skin and bones, wearing blood soaked clothes, I look sleep deprived, and my eyes are a... light blue? That's strange, they're typically green.

'I need to get out of here' I think to myself, suddenly uneasy.

I walk out and down the hall, moving through the couch and stopping behind my mother. I stare at her back for a little, the officers voice becoming a little fuzzy as I reach out, hugging her the best I can, before walking through the both of them, barely hearing my mother's words as I went.

     "Did you feel that breeze?"

This may or may not be a thing I post whenever I can. Just testing the waters! It's about a kid struggling with some stuff, and he may or may not try... things. I don't know what this is... slice of life?
