I heard once that if you say something over a hundred times it becomes true, to you at least. Maybe that's all I really need to do; just say I don't love Skylar anymore a hundred times and it will become true. That doesn't sound too hard.
"Stop hogging the mirror," Jade elbowed Kenzie hard in the side.
"Stop hogging the mirror," Kenzie mocked her in a more annoying version of Jade's voice.
We were back to being crammed into one room while we got ready to go get something to eat before heading to the Disney resort. Aphrodite basically claimed the bathroom as hers, locking everyone else out. Jade and Kenzie were fighting over the mirror on the wall by the bed while Skylar just sat there, like me, waiting for Aphrodite to get out.
"Stop it, you are going to make me mess up," Jade complained.
"Trust me no amount of make can fix that," Kenzie said.
I snorted in amusement which caused Jade to glare at me. I stuck my tongue out at her, just to piss her off. She gave me the bird. I glanced at Skylar then back to Jade, wiggling my eyebrows. Jade mouthed Fuck you.
"Stop it." Skylar groaned and put a pillow over her face.
She had been watching the whole thing.
I frowned at her.
Finally, Aphrodite came out of the restroom, fully ready.
"Finally, geez." I got up to get ready.
"I'm ready, anyone want to walk with me to the car to put up the stuff?" Aphrodite asked.
"I'll go, I'm ready too." Kenzie volunteered.
I shut the bathroom door to change.
Sadly the walls are thin so I could hear,
"Just get dressed, it's only us now," Jade said.
"I can wait."
"Not like I haven't seen you naked before."
"Ugh fine."
"Just be fast, I don't want anyone sneaking any peaks," Jade said.
"Will you cut it out."
"She's all over you!"
"Jade, first of all, she is not. Second, it's none of your business. Third, you know how I feel about you. So stop."
I rolled my eyes as I heard Jade pout.
I quickly got washed up and changed before brushing out my hair and deciding on putting it up today.
Maybe if I just pretend Jade's not there, she will actually disappear, is that how life works? I can only dream I guess.
"Maybe you should wear no shirt, you look so cute." I heard Jade say.
"Stop it," Skylar mumbled.
"Mmm, look at those abs."
"You know I'm going to gain a lot of weight just so you will stop teasing me about my abs."
"Then I'll get to pinch your love handles like this,"
"Stop it," Skylar giggled.
I could only guess the two were flirting with their hands. I clenched my jaw and did my best to resist the urge to open the door. In the end, I was weak. I swung open the door and I heard Skylar yelp. I stepped out of the bathroom and saw her putting a shirt on, Jade's face was red. Skylar was turning redder by the second.
They must have been doing more than flirting.
"Ready yet?" I asked.
"Just about," Jade went back to inspecting herself in the mirror.
"Almost, I need to get in there." Skylar pointed to the bathroom.
"All yours." I forced a smile and stepped out of the way.
She quickly went inside and shut the door.
I glanced at Jade who was smiling smugly at me. God, I just want to slap that look off her face. Is it too late to ship her back home? Just ignore her Darleen, you can do this. I sighed put on my shoes. Doing last-minute touch-ups before quickly leaving the room in search of the two people who I actually like being around and for the most part, don't cause drama.
"You should just go for it," Kenzie said.
Her and Aphrodite's backs were to me as they loaded up the car.
"Yeah and make a fool out of myself? No thank you."
"What are you guys talking about?" I ask.
They both flinch and turn to me.
"Sorry, didn't mean to sneak up on you. I just needed out of that room asap."
"I hear that. God can we like "accidentally" leave Jade here for the rest of the trip?" Kenzie asked.
"Skylar would kill me." I sighed.
"Jade is such a slob. I saw her sniff the socks she wore yesterday to see if they were clean. Then she put them back on!" Aphrodite said.
"Ew!" Kenzie and I said in unison before all three of us laughed.
"Welcome to the, we hate Jade club." I pat Aphrodite on the shoulder.
"Now I know what you two were talking about. The girl has the maturity level of a chimp."
"I don't know, I think that's an insult to the chimp," Kenzie said.
We all laughed some more.
"So, where to for brunch? I mean it's still early enough to get breakfast, but I'm feeling kind of lunchy." I say.
"Lunchy isn't a word." Aphrodite points out.
"I declare that it is now. Besides I'm also feeling kind of lunchy." Kenzie said.
"Two against one," I smirk.
"Ugh fine, I may be feeling a bit... lunchy too." She rolled her eyes.
I giggled at her.
This caused her to blush.
"Um, I'm going to go check on Jade!" Kenzie quickly declared before walking off back to the room, leaving me alone with Aphrodite.
"Okay, weird." I shrugged before moving to put up the rest of the bags.
"So, uh... I saw that you got your own room last night."
"Yeah, Jade was hogging the bed."
"Skylar stayed with you?"
"Yep." I shove a bag in deeper.
"Did anything happen between you two?" she asked.
I turned to her and raised an eyebrow.
She blushed and avoided my gaze.
"No, nothing happened," I said.
"Oh."
We stood there in awkward silence for a moment before I turned and closed the trunk.
"I was just going to ask you," Aphrodite started.
I turned to her and leaned against the car.
"If you want, I mean... maybe you and I could like get away tonight. Just the two of us. Alone. For like a dinner or something." She tried to sound casual, but her fidgeting hands gave her away.
I sighed and looked away from her, "I don't know." I shrugged.
"Oh." She sounded disappointed.
"I mean what about everyone else?"
"Kenzie said she could watch over her snotty cousin for a bit." She quickly interjected.
"Is that what you two were talking about?"
She shrugged and avoided my gaze.
"I thought you wanted to do this, as friends." I pointed out.
"I did, I mean I do. I just...nothing, never mind. It was stupid, forget the whole thing. We should go and check to see what the hold up is." She moved to leave.
"Wait," I stopped her.
She turned to look at me with that sparkle of hope in her eyes. I felt my insides knot together. I closed my eyes and took a deep breath. I need to stop looking back. I need to move forward. I can do this. I'll start with number one. I don't love Skylar anymore.
"I... I would like that. If you and I just got away for a while."
"Really!?" she said in surprise.
I smile and nod.
She smiled too and quickly engulfed me in a hug.
"Hey, easy. It's just dinner." I giggle.
She pulled back and looked into my eyes. Why does my heart always beat so fast when she's near? Do I still have feelings for her? Could we go back to being more than just friends? Is that what I want?
I lean in hesitantly; she does the same.
"Alright let's get the show on the road!" Jade called.
We jolted apart before our lips could touch.
My eyes darted to Skylar and she pretended that she wasn't interested in what she had seen. Her eyes locked on nothing in particular. But I could see that small grimace on her face. A tiny hint that she was in pain. My heart hurt for her.
My eyes moved back to Aphrodite and she glared at me, shaking her head in disappointment. My eyes follow her as she walks over to the car and gets into the back seat, slamming the door shut.
Kenzie cringed and quickly went into the car after her.
"Smooth," Jade teased me before crossing her arms and walking to the car too.
Skylar and I share a look. Her expression shifts between heartache to determination. She takes a deep breath and without a word gets into the passage seat of the car.
With a sigh, I walk to the front office and turn in the room key. Then I get in the car and start it up. I glance through the rearview mirror. Jade is on her phone, Kenzie is rubbing Aphrodite's arm for comfort, and Aphrodite is glaring out the window. When I look to Skylar she stares miserably out the window, resting her arm on the door.
Just great, it's barely day one and I've already ruined the trip. Way to go Darleen. I need to forget about romance. I don't need romance to have fun. This trip is supposed to get my mind off of everything. So far that is not the case. So we need to do a 180 and find a way to cheer everyone up.
