A somber comic this week. I didn't upload a comic last week in solidarity with Black Lives Matter and Blackout Tuesday. The conversation must go on.
I have had my share of racism as an Asian, but it is a far cry from what the Black community has to endure. The constant anxiety of living everyday life having to worry that, at any moment, you could be attacked or killed because someone could assume you're a threat purely for the colour of your skin. When there is injustice, the system that is meant to protect you is instead designed to cast a disproportionate amount of doubt on you and put you at a disadvantage. When you speak up, the responsibility falls to you to constantly justify yourself. A society that takes advantage of your culture but gives no respect in return. All of this and many more happening in a country you call home. I don’t claim to fully understand what they’re facing. I only have an inkling. I am trying to learn more. It is a more important time than ever to take it upon ourselves to get educated on this subject. There are plenty of resources out there that have been readily available to anyone who wants to educate themselves. They are available in the link below.
We have to recognise that the safety and freedom most of us have in our lives is something that we take for granted. It is time we insist on a change for those who don't have that basic human right. Black Lives Matter doesn't mean only Black lives matter. This is one of many fights against injustice ahead, and it is a crucial and urgent one. Once we can bring about the change they desperately need, we will be able to do the same for other communities. All lives can't matter until Black lives matter.
