In Dreams: One Soul

To Train a Demon

To Train a Demon

Jun 21, 2020

Harlee POV
I was shocked by the sudden emotional overflow through our link from Zeev.  He quickly let go of me and placed me back on the bed, muttering about food and something else and walked out of the room.  I stood up hesitantly, but since the room didn't spin on me, took it as a good sign and followed him out to the kitchen.

"Harlee!"  Zeev scolded  "I wish you would have stayed put, I would have brought this to you."  Then, like a dog who is afraid his master won't approve, he froze and I could almost see him expose his belly in my mind's eye.  The wolf name was truly fitting.  I laughed and he relaxed slightly.  I walked forward and touched his Mark gently, which at this moment was the image of a wolf with bowed head and slumped shoulders, ears and tail drooping, set against an empty night sky.  He twitched slightly.

"It changes with your mood."  I said amazed.

"It changes with your perception of me."  Zeev corrected.  I grinned.

"Cool."  I answered brightly.  "So mine?"  I reached up, but his thumb got there first.

"Does the same, but it's unwavering.  The North Star, even brighter now perhaps."  His thumb sent a tingling through me again.

"That's awesome."  I whispered, then sat down on a stool before I fell down.  "Some food would probably be a good idea."  I told Zeev softly and he gritted his teeth like he wanted to scold me, then shook his head and grinned.

"Coming right up."

Zeev POV
Harlee was not entirely aware of what her approval of my true personality meant to me, but that was alright.  It just proved to me once again that my Heart couldn't be possessed by anyone more fitting.  I watched the subtle changes in her over the next few days.  She was mostly oblivious to those as well, it seemed, but others took notice.  She began to take on the allure of a Demon without even trying.  Her every move had even the most difficult customer suddenly eating out of her hand.  Even her friend Kayla noticed, and I saw her staring at Harlee open-mouthed a couple of times.

Ah sweet Kayla-she and I still had an agreement that I'd been neglecting to resolve.  Things would prove to be more difficult now that Harlee possessed my Heart...

I felt Harlee's discomfort as she stretched her back.  There had been an increase in customers to the customer service desk of late.  She didn't know why, since most didn't have returns, but I knew they were there simply to look at her, see if the rumors were true.

"Zeev."  I heard her breathe as I appeared behind her, bending the light around me so I remained invisible.  I stood directly behind her and pulled her body against mine, willing it to warm to relax her muscles.  She let her head fall back and stifled a moan.

"Hey Harlee!  You gonna work?  Or just stand there?"  The boy part timer asked with disdain.  I tsked in my head and Harlee groaned.

"Coming!"  She called.

Harlee POV
'Don't leave!'  I begged Zeev through our link.

'Yes, my Lady.'  He replied and I sent a death glare in his direction.  Even though no one else could see him, I still could.

"So, did you and your man have a hot night last night?"  Kayla teased, handing me a box of returned clothing.  I blushed.

"No, why?"  I almost shrieked.

"Oh nothing, you were just over there looking all relaxed and almost too 'happy' about something."  Kayla giggled and I blushed harder.

"We don't-I mean-we haven't-"  I stammered.  Kayla nearly dropped the box she was carrying.

"What?!  All this time and you two have never done the deed?  You've never held back with your other boyfriends!  You and Zeev are so handsy with each other, I figured as soon as nobody was around you guys were-you know-let's just say in a state of permanent undress."  Kayla replied, shocked.

"No-I mean, Zeev and I don't really have that kind of relationship."  I felt like my face should melt.

"Oh my God, and he's still with you?  Girl-marry that man!  Never let him go!  A man that won't pressure a woman to have sex?"  Kayla was almost drooling  "And still sticks around?  And looks like that?  Wait-why haven't you asked him for it-damn-I wouldn't be able to keep my hands off of that!"  I flinched.

"Until recently, we really weren't all that close."  I rubbed my jaw lightly along the Mark and felt it tingle.  Zeev's attention immediately focused on me and I waved him off in my head.

"I meant to ask you-when did you get the tattoo?  What does it mean?  It's so pretty!"  Kayla stepped closer and reached out a finger.  I snatched her hand.

"Don't touch it."  I snapped, then took a deep breath.  "Sorry, it's still tender."  Kayla winced and I let go of her hand.

"Yeah sure, I get it."  She muttered.  We set the boxes of clothing down with the stack of other returns in the back.

"It's the North Star.  Zeev and I got 'matching tattoos' so to speak.  He calls me his guiding light-the North Star-so this is what I, or we, settled on to memorialize it.  Since I used to call him the Big Bad Wolf, he got a wolf tattoo."  I shrugged.

"Awww..."  Kayla gushed.

'Nice cover story.'  Zeev sent through our link.

'Aw shut up.'  I sighed.

Zeev POV
I watched the girls return from the back and noticed I wasn't the only one watching.  That little twerp, he was eyeballing Harlee again.  I clenched my fists.

'Zeev-are you-jealous?'  Harlee asked in my mind.

'He's dangerous Harlee-I don't trust him.'  I answered.  When she reached me, I grabbed her in my arms again.  She let out a little squeak and Kayla and the boy looked at her curiously.

"Sorry, I stubbed my toe."  She told them, lifting a leg to kick back at me.

'Feisty.'  I remarked

'Down boy.'  She answered.  I grunted

'Be careful with the commands, they can be misconstrued.'  I replied.  She relaxed into my arms, allowing me to bear most of her weight.

'When do you think they'll be coming back for us?'  Harlee sighed.  I knew she was referring to Heaven or Hell since they were both after us.

'Time doesn't move the same for Divine or Demonic creatures.  To us, it's like mere seconds have passed.  You'll see eventually."  I felt her wince.

"Earth to Harlee!  Seriously, what use are you?"  The boy yelled.  I gritted my teeth, but felt Harlee's soothing presence in my mind.

'Down boy.'  She said again gently and I turned my head away with a sigh.

Harlee POV
I looked at Josh as he worked, trying to figure out why Zeev felt so threatened by him.  The kid was in high school, in some worker's experience program.  We hardly every crossed paths because of his weird shift schedule designed to let him work around classes.  He was a kid!  Almost half my age, rude, obnoxious, had nothing on Zeev in the looks department.  So what was it that got under his skin?

"Why are you staring at me like that?"  Josh sniped, then flushed crimson.

"I'm just wondering if all dicks come in your shade, or if they vary."  I replied.  The customer behind the counter snickered.  Josh turned on me.

"Excuse me?!  You should know-your boyfriend's the biggest dick of them all!"  He shouted.

"Aww, are we jealous?  Short on size now too?"  I tsked.

"That's enough!"  Came a sharp voice.  I grimaced.  The manager.

"Get back to work!  Harlee-I'm giving you a warning."  He said.

"Speaking of dicks..."  I muttered under my breath.  The customer snickered again and the manager looked like he wanted to say something else, but shook his head and retreated to the break room.  Josh finished helping the customer and he paused scribbling something on the back of his receipt.  He handed it across the counter to me.

"Funny and gorgeous-just my type.  If you get tired of these dicks around here, give me a call."  The customer winked and left.  Josh bristled.

'Well played.'  Zeev commented and pulled me back against him again.

'Yeah, but it got me a strike on my record.'  I sighed.  I felt Zeev shrug.

'For now.'  He thought wickedly.  I could almost feel his evil smirk.

Ah dear Zeev, what the hell are you planning? Pun entirely intended.

"They say the eyes are the window to the soul" The creature purrs as its talons dig into my face, tearing out my eye and pulling away half of my face. "But I find the chest is an easier access point"...

How could it be that those slitted eyes that I once found so terrifying, I now found so comforting?

A hungry demon tries to devour a girl after being brought to the brink of death himself. Instead of absorbing her soul and body as he intended, her soul somehow rips in half, and now each of them carries half of her soul. They are now two parts of the same being, two bodies, one soul. Connected by a soul that longs to be whole again but is trapped, permanently separated. Hunted by Hell, Heaven and Earth alike, their minds, memories and thoughts keep merging, and worse, their relationship keeps getting more tangled as time goes on. How will they get out of this mess, and do they even want to?

Written from the point of view of both characters, there are a lot of switches back and forth and mingling of their thoughts/minds/emotions. There are also many memory and time hops as these chapters will be written in a train of thought style. This may be confusing for some readers.
