Castaway advice: Is this possible? We actually tried to look this up and found nothing to dispute it, so here goes. Empty two coconut shells and follow this friendly advice to make bamboo string:

Of course, you'll need to figure out the holes and nails, but as most islands of the world have refuse and other trash lopped upon them every second of the day, you're bound to find something washed up. A GOOD bit of advice there. Comb your surrounding beach and collect what you can. Keep them stored away someplace so you have a makeshift toolbox, first aid kit, etc.
