“Scruffy is a he and not an it, Yuma.” Maedra fought back her tears with some effort. “And he and I share a special bond.”
“Did you eat anything strange, like fermented berries or bad mushrooms in the Dark Forest, Mae?” The tomboy stuck out her tongue and crossed her eyes. “You sure don’t sound like the big sister I know.”
“So much has happened in the last three days, Yuma.” She calmed herself, Yuma was just being her stubborn little self and Maedra was not going to let that upset her any more than she already was. “I don’t think any of us will ever be the same.”
“Let’s hope not.” Yuma suddenly sounded very serious. “Arden will rally the Diabane and we will rescue all our people. Then we will rebuild our village... maybe more to the south this time.”
“I love your optimism, dear Yuma. I really wish it would be so.” She gave her sister a weak smile and looked away. “But I fear worse days are yet to come.”
“Let them come.” She heard her sibling snort. “We can deal with them and with these stupid Predakren as well.”
“The Predakren are not to be taken lightly, young Yuma.” A lilting voice drifted over them and Maedra found herself looking up at the smiling Alvaine.
