Waking up on the first day of school always has a fresh feeling. I remember that day so well. I had gotten up late and had to hurry to get to the school bus on time because the bus went over the bridge and there was no other way to get to school if you missed it.
"Allison," my mom started speaking to me, as I was running down the stairs.
"I'm running late. Did you need something, Mom?"
"No, but you skipped breakfast. Please, eat something at school."
"Yes, ma'am," I said putting my tennis shoes on and running to the bus stop.
On the Island, we only have one-stop for the school buses to pick all of us up. I usually sat with my friends, but today I felt like sitting alone with headphones in listening to the new song that Kala released.
"Allison?" I felt a tap on my shoulder. It was Jack, a 17-year-old football player, who has a crush on me for god knows how long.
"Jack," I took a headphone earpiece out of my ear, "How was your summer?"
"It was great," he said, squeezing into the seat with me. "How was yours?"
"It was fine."
"Did you think about what I told you on the last day of school last year?"
He had told me about his feelings for me on the last day of sophomore year. "I don't think we should Jack. You've been my best friend for years. Also, it would break Madison's heart." He looked at the back of the bus, where Maddy sat. She was the Cheer Caption of the cheerleading team, and I knew that she loved him. She had told me that she doesn't want to be my friend anymore because of Jack liking me. I didn't understand why, because it wasn't my fault that he liked me. Also, it wasn't like I liked him, but she insisted.
"Maddy? Why would it break her..."
"Ally?" I turned to face the person who called me. "I thought that was you. Jack, can I switch seats with you?"
He looked at her, "I reall...
"Jack, I'll talk to you after school," I interrupted him, trying to get him to shut up.
"Fine," he said standing up and switching with Nicole, my best friend since we were in diapers.
"Hey, I thought you could use the help of getting out of that," she said as he went to the back to Maddy.
"Thanks," I said about to put my headphone back in.
"Are you okay?"
"Yeah, I'm just tired."
"Tell me about it," she chuckled.
I put my headphone back in and sat back into the bus seat as we reach the school building. Never did I think that I would walk into the thing that will change my whole life around.
