So this is an obvious joke, right? Nothing new. No groundbreaking satirical gag. Just a good old fashioned re-joke.
Or, as I believe, a very close cousin to a very real problem. I grew up in the southeastern United States. And as much as the joke above is relevant – especially to a place like the “south” – it’s a similar symptom to the STILL present and sickening issue of actual racism. Those who know me are crystal clear as to how much I hate it. But don’t be fooled; racism is not limited to the southern United States. I’ve been all around this country – quite literally – and I can absolutely attest to the fact that it is still a problem, it’s everywhere and it is born of the same thought process. For some reason – some stupid, incomprehensible reason – there are people who actually believe they are better based on the sole criteria of melanin.
I’ll be honest – I could not care less about NASCAR, with only a slight interest in Indy Car. The joke is just a two-fold stab at creating a spark of thought concerning racism, as well as the USA-centric, arrogant mentality that I spoke in detail about back in Another Comic Strip #3 (Made In America) – in fact, you’ll notice several little Americanisms in the comic above.
There is a difference between being proud of your country and ethnicity, verses believing you are a superior human being because of them. Don’t be fooled into thinking that racism has all but died out. AND, don’t fall into the trap of thinking that it’s one way. It comes from every race, and it’s wrong.
***** You'll notice a gap between #3 and #12 - this is because my mini Batman web comic 'The Real Killing Joke' ran from #4 to #11. That series can also be found here on Tapastic *****
